I urge everyone to carry at all times, no matter what. I haven't posted about this yet on any of the forums I visit and only my closest friends know what happened to me, but here's a brief story.
A couple of months ago, I decide to leave the house to get something to eat. I wear a crossbreed supertuck and a Glock 23 and it's so comfortable that I often forget I'm even wearing it. That's both good and bad because there's been a couple of times that I don't realize that I DON'T have the gun on me when I leave the house.
On this evening, I had removed my firearm while doing some design work on the computer and left the firearm at home when I left to get something to eat. Fast forward a bit, I was ambushed on both sides of the vehicle by 2 individuals with knives. I am usually very alert and very cautious, but even I was caught off guard and it happened so fast.
While fighting off one individual on the driver side with the knife, I reached for my firearm only to realize the epic fail of reaching for an empty holster. Thankfully I had my pocket knife with me and used my knife to defend myself. However, when all was said and done, the second individual came through the passenger side and had stabbed me twice from behind (one in the back, the other below my right armpit) while I was busy fighting the other individual. I didn't even realize I had been stabbed until minutes after the encounter and noticed that I was covered in my own blood.
This resulted in a 1 week stay in the hospital, a nasty chest scar from where they operated on me, and a 1 inch deep gash into my liver, and a whole stack of medical bills that I'm now dealing with. What's worse is that the perpetrators have not been caught and most likely won't ever will. They did all this for my car keys and attempted to take my wallet, but I wear a wallet chain and they were unsuccessful in removing my wallet. I am extremely lucky to even be alive and I have a whole new outlook on life now. I hope the set of keys were worth it for those assholes.
Anyways, 2 words of advice is always always always keep your car doors locked. If you're not sure, re-lock them. If you let someone in or drop someone off, re-lock them if they don't autolock themselves. Also, always always carry a defensive weapon. It doesn't have to be a firearm, it can be mace, a tazer, a knife, ect. A firearm is preferable, but a knife is an effective defensive tool. I recommend carrying both. If I didn't have my knife with me, I don't think I would be alive right now.
I shudder to think what would have happened to anyone else that wasn't carrying or prepared to defend themselves in that situation. Not that I'm a badass or anything, but I can think of a lot of people that would be dead in that same situation. There was no time to "comply" or anything. I looked one way and then looked back and the door was open with a knife being thrusted straight to my face. I barely was able to grab the knife in time or my throat would have been slit open.
Anyways, stay safe and always carry defensive weapons. With the selection of light pocket pistols, great IWB holsters, knives, tasers, mace, ect. there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to not carry any defensive protection or concealed firearm.
This can happen anywhere and it will often happen when you least expect it. On a positive note, this experience has resulted in 3 of my closest friends to apply for their CCL and have even converted a couple of my anti-gun friends to purchase a firearm for home defense.
