Why don't you carry?

True, but I don't necessarily think that preparedness HAS to be stressful. It needs to be diligent but not stressful.

Well, stressful may be too strong a word for it. Lets just say I used to be able to tune out anything, now I try to pay attention to everything.

okay never again. I ran out the door this morning and forgot to throw mine in the truck with me. And there have been 2 instances tonight where I felt nervous. The first was at a loves in guthrie where a guy was telling the clerk how he was gonna be locked up for the next 4 years starting 6am and he wanted to run....the other, well its in my stilly thread,

Above all else, use common sense. Avoid spooky places with spooky people. Deny those who would harm you the ability/oppurtunity to do so. True, stuff happens. In the most unlikely of places.

Train hard. And not just with your firearms or your hands. Train your brain. Learn to recognize problems. You are the weapon, everything else is just a tool.

Some of the best advice a CCW could ever hear. Situational Awareness. Its crazy how much people do not notice as they go about their day.

I'm going to be on the road next week.
Can anyone till me if New mexico honors OK's carry lic.?

I urge everyone to carry at all times, no matter what. I haven't posted about this yet on any of the forums I visit and only my closest friends know what happened to me, but here's a brief story.

A couple of months ago, I decide to leave the house to get something to eat. I wear a crossbreed supertuck and a Glock 23 and it's so comfortable that I often forget I'm even wearing it. That's both good and bad because there's been a couple of times that I don't realize that I DON'T have the gun on me when I leave the house.

On this evening, I had removed my firearm while doing some design work on the computer and left the firearm at home when I left to get something to eat. Fast forward a bit, I was ambushed on both sides of the vehicle by 2 individuals with knives. I am usually very alert and very cautious, but even I was caught off guard and it happened so fast.

While fighting off one individual on the driver side with the knife, I reached for my firearm only to realize the epic fail of reaching for an empty holster. Thankfully I had my pocket knife with me and used my knife to defend myself. However, when all was said and done, the second individual came through the passenger side and had stabbed me twice from behind (one in the back, the other below my right armpit) while I was busy fighting the other individual. I didn't even realize I had been stabbed until minutes after the encounter and noticed that I was covered in my own blood.

This resulted in a 1 week stay in the hospital, a nasty chest scar from where they operated on me, and a 1 inch deep gash into my liver, and a whole stack of medical bills that I'm now dealing with. What's worse is that the perpetrators have not been caught and most likely won't ever will. They did all this for my car keys and attempted to take my wallet, but I wear a wallet chain and they were unsuccessful in removing my wallet. I am extremely lucky to even be alive and I have a whole new outlook on life now. I hope the set of keys were worth it for those assholes.

Anyways, 2 words of advice is always always always keep your car doors locked. If you're not sure, re-lock them. If you let someone in or drop someone off, re-lock them if they don't autolock themselves. Also, always always carry a defensive weapon. It doesn't have to be a firearm, it can be mace, a tazer, a knife, ect. A firearm is preferable, but a knife is an effective defensive tool. I recommend carrying both. If I didn't have my knife with me, I don't think I would be alive right now.

I shudder to think what would have happened to anyone else that wasn't carrying or prepared to defend themselves in that situation. Not that I'm a badass or anything, but I can think of a lot of people that would be dead in that same situation. There was no time to "comply" or anything. I looked one way and then looked back and the door was open with a knife being thrusted straight to my face. I barely was able to grab the knife in time or my throat would have been slit open.

Anyways, stay safe and always carry defensive weapons. With the selection of light pocket pistols, great IWB holsters, knives, tasers, mace, ect. there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to not carry any defensive protection or concealed firearm.

This can happen anywhere and it will often happen when you least expect it. On a positive note, this experience has resulted in 3 of my closest friends to apply for their CCL and have even converted a couple of my anti-gun friends to purchase a firearm for home defense.

wow, where did this happen at?? (like what cross streets were you on) thanks for sharing glad you are OK... on the joking side, you are one of the few people that can "honestly" say....
If someone asks you "wow dude where did you get that scar?"
You can reply "fighting two guys in a knife fight!!"

you have to admit that is pretty cool response!!

When on active militaryduty, I could only carry in uniform if under orders to be armed with GI gun and GI bullets.

However, since being retired I don't have that restriction, so there always seems to be a gun with me except when going to be on VA or military property (guns NOT allowed in vehicles, state law does not apply).

When back in KY where I still have property, there is even less restriction, as KY has constitutional open carry and a vehicle is treated the same as your home (loaded gun concealed in glove box OR open). Their law on self defense is also much less restrictive then OK's. (Don't make a verbal treat in KY with your hand in your pocket, you could get shot on the spot)

Compared to KY, we are more restrictive, but I'm greatful for what we have. If we can just get an open carry law passed, I'll be much happier.

Aestus, that was a bad situation to be in. Glad the outcome wasn't worse for you. Shame you didn't have your weapon, and did a little cleansing of the gene pool.

If I'm awake, there is a 95% chance I am carrying, when I step out of the house you can up it to 100% as much as the lwa allows. I just make it a habit to be top priority.

I just returned from a week in California. A week that kept me painfully aware that I was not packing a handgun everyday.

After you "get used" to CW's... you really notice it's not with you.

We were in Canada on vacation earlier this month, so I know what it feels like walking around with nothing in my pocket or waist band. I did take the biggest folding knife I own though.

I carry everywhere I am able all the time!

EXCEPT at work. I work for Moore Schools and we all know that is a huge No, No!

But I love my job waaaaaaaaaaaay to much to do something else just so I can carry at work,

I drive a company vehicle and they do not allow me to carry, plus I work at military installations frequently which also wouldn't allow it. I do carry anytime I'm not at work, and always have at least one knife.

I will vouch for Aestus...he is definitely not a bad ass. But I'm in the same boat as CoolJeff. Can't carry a gun at work because it's a school. Unfortunately, my school is in one of those places that will make your senses tingle. It just makes me extra alert and cautious.

I am just curious what some of the reasons are for those who have a concealed carry license but choose not to carry?
I carry sometimes but not all the time. For me it's a matter of where I'm going, and how many places have them banned.

I mean, let's just say that I take a trip to the local big city. Basic logic says I should carry. But, if I stop a rest area, that's a government building and I'll probably get in big trouble if I am caught carrying there. If I go to the zoo, same thing, big trouble. My favorite restaurant is a brewery, big trouble. How about a concert... yup, big no-no. And the thing is, I can't just walk back to the car and disarm/re-arm with every visit. Even if I could, I'd be more worried about being all tactically aware rather than smiling at the band and enjoying my beer. And even if all this wasn't an issue and somebody comes around a corner with a pistol drawn and already has the drop on me, what the hell am I really going to do other than just give up my wallet peacefully??? So what is the point? Sometimes you just have to let go and live.
