Charles Daly 1911s

I only have a Tisas which I am very happy with, my first and only 1911. I have seen the Charles Daly I believe at Atwoods. I believe some of the online places have them for around $300 now.

Anyone held/shot one of these? I am looking at them in the 9mm and there are a few YT videos on them but looking for first hand. I know there are many brands that may be better but these are Sub-400 and I want to start with this one before moving to more. At Palmetto State Armory you can pick one up rather cheap.
RC:
I am confused as to what you are trying to do here. Do you have other 9mm's or are you trying to get started with a 9mm? I believe that you are saying that you do not have a 1911 and are looking at starting with this CD 1911?

1911's can be temperamental and sometimes it takes some time and money to get them to run the way they should. I have seen some problems with Colts, SA, RI, WC, EB, etc. The question is, if you have to put a couple hundred in that CD in parts and labor is it still a deal? I also understand that money is tight.

Yes I do not own any 1911 but would like one, I also want a 9mm version rather then the 45, that is simply due to me having more 9mm as all of my pistols are 9mm so I have plenty of ammo to shoot right out the gate.

Just another thought, another couple hundred dollars and you can have a RIA with a lot of upgrades, G 10 grips, way better sights, extended magwell, skeletonized hammer and trigger, these do have mim parts but I personally have never had issues, several of these been running in IDPA matches in my area for years with no problems plus lifetime warranty, one of the best in firearms industry, I know money doesn't go as far in current economy but this one good bang for the buck, this just one example on Gunbroker

I would go with the RI before a CD

Not me

My experience is solely from the grip and grip bushing perspective. I have never had anyone ask me about a Charles Daly 1911.

Several have mentioned warranties..I wanted to add this, it's not only that a lifetime warranty is offered ( or any warranty)
it's more about how the company stands behind their warranty.
The American Classic 1911 9mm I mentioned in my earlier post, it had a warranty. (Don't remember it's duration)
Shortly after I bought the pistol, I discovered a small pit in the barrel, a void in the metal. After contacting the company I was given a gunsmith/shop that had been contracted to handle their warranty repairs. I was told I would have to send him the entire pistol ( @ my expense) for him to examine, to determine if a warranty repair would be done. He informed me I couldn't just send him the barrel. Not wanting to deal with the hassle & expense of shipping the pistol,
I elected to buy a barrel & replace it myself.

To contrast this experience, I bought a used S&W 617 ( a SS .22 revolver ) andafter shooting it, while cleaning the cylinder, noted a defect ( void) in one of the chambers. Spoke with my gunsmith, he suggested contacting S&W, so I called them. I provided that I'd bought the used gun recently, & discovered the issue. They sent me a prepaid mailer to return the gun to them, they replaced the cylinder, and returned the revolver to me @ no charge, for the repair or shipping.

Needless to add, I'd buy another S&W product, but not any more American Classic firearms, or anything from Metro Arms, their parent company.

I've used Rock Island's warranty, not for a 1911, one of their M5 pump shotguns, they were great, paid for shipping both ways, got shotgun back in couple weeks, very easy process

I would say then, you have other 9mm's so save up some extra $ and buy a higher quality unit.
"don't be penny wise and pound foolish"

The KISS principle.
Keep It Simple Stupid

You have other 9's save up and get something better.

Tisas seems to ne the best value in a 1911 nowadays for a first 1911. It is reviewed as a good solidly well built handgun anf reliable handgun manufactured to the time honored historic workhorse design by John Browning.

That money would be better spent by saving up for a Springfield Armory 1911. You will wind up spending the difference in trying to make the Chas. Daly work. Buy once, Cry Once.

Why would you not shoot it with it having such a good trigger that's what it was made for. Take it out & enjoy it shooting! See what size groups you're capable of shooting with the economically purchased 1911. What sights does it have on it?

I've heard that S&W were really good about warranty work. Sounds like what I heard was correct.

Very little information is available online about the Charles Daly 1911 pistols except that the company has gone through several ownerships throughout the years and who knows who or where they are today. As good as they might be, I would not risk my money on one when there are plenty of low-priced alternatives available. Turkey has several good gun manufacturers that would be better choices today, such as Tisas or Girsan. Rock Island Armory (RIA) out of the Phillippines claims to be the largest 1911 manufacturer in the world and I wouldn't doubt it. I own a 10mm 1911 (The Rock) which is fantastic.

No experience with Charles Daly either. Sorry....

I have a Rock Island Armory FS 1911-A1 and it has well over 1,100 rounds and not one failure. Amazing performance that rivals Tisa.

All Good I put it on pause until later this year I have other things on my plate at the moment before I spend this kinda money on a decent one.
