@CECannonjr -- made a great post the other day about wood grips for a 1911. I wanted to make a post about a particular favorite type of "one-of-a-kind" style wooden grip that anyone would find special.
You might have seen the photo of my RIA with the plain wood grips (slick as snot!
) or the common black rubber grips (okay, work fine, etc..) But I was looking for something unique for my RIA 1911. Back in 2016, I discovered a guy up in NH with a CNC router or whatever and he made custom handgun grips. I called him up, we chatted about 1911's and me being a retired "Coastie". One thing led to another, and he said he had the CNC template for a checkered grip with the USCG logo! We talked more about wood, and he suggested something unique and also dealing with old time sailing ships... Teak. It is naturally waterproof and would be easily workable in his CNC router machine. For $60 bucks he made me my 1911 grips and I love them and will keep them on my RIA 1911 forever. I doubt there is anyone anywhere who has a full size RIA 1911 with checkered Teak grips with the USCG logo!
