Good morning gentlemen. I suppose I have my share of aches and pains at 57 (in 11 days). But, I think I may have more than average considering how beat up I've been along the way; motorcycle crashes, direct hit from an F4 tornado, head-on collision at 55 mph, thanks to a drunk driver. Now, I have back pain from 2 blown disks, and scoliosis from L2 thru L5. Doc says I need a fusion.

Now, with all that said, like I need a new problem, I can hardly walk this morning because I tweaked something in the right side of my azz last night (the good side) during the simple chore of putting my drawers on after getting out of the shower. Have I got the best luck or what?

End of rant.

Getting old is no fun, but it's the best alternative.

I hope you gentlemen at least get a smile or a chuckle from reading this, and have a blessed day!

Looking back at my life, I'm just stunned that I am still alive much less still walking.
Working on & Racing Motorcycles for years I had many cases of road rash & broken bones LOL.

Doc says I need a fusion.
Take your time & exhaust every other measure first. Fusion is forever.

Of course there is always Whisky.

Believe me when I say that I have discovered a good Bourbon is the best pain relief as long as I don't overdo it. If overdone, it causes new problems, mostly related to the head in the morning.

5 years ago this coming July 31st I had my L4, L5 and L6 fused with pins and rods holding it all together. 6 months post surgery and long after being cleared for normal everyday activities the 2 screw on my right side snapped and the vertebrae. Only after plenty of research did I discover that this is common occurrence with this surgery. So now instead of being fixed I'm permanently saddled with a bad back and nothing but extreme major surgery to correct the problem.
I strongly recommend getting multiple different opinions before undergoing and sort of back surgery. Only when your quality of life has deteriorated to the point where you can't take the pain anymore do I suggest getting back surgery and then only after you and your surgeon have exhausted ALL other options. Best of luck as a fellow 56 almost 57 year old man.

Thanks for that very good advice. I intend to put it off as long as possible. It does hinder me considerably, but I just keep pushing on. I get what I need to do done. It just takes longer because of frequent breaks due to pain.

Joe Walsh once said that It was better being 20 in the 70's than to be 70 in the 20's. I totally agree Thank you Joe Walsh

Here comes more company for you. I just turned 67 last month. Some people say, "You're as old as you feel". I disagree because I'm not near 100 yet. My backbone wore out early and I had to retire when I was 51. I had six surgeries in eleven months. The most intrusive were a 3-Level fusion on C4-5, C5-6, and C6-7 in my neck in February 2010. Then a 3-Level fusion on L3, L4, and L5 on September 14 (through the front) and September 16 (through the back) 2010. The other surgeries were sprinkled in between these. I've got 18 screws and bolts, 3 plates and 2 rods on my spine. I say let surgery be the last thing you do. I have to admit though, the surgeries stopped the severe pain from the herniated discs that were pinching the nerves. Unfortunately there's no fix for the arthritis I have from top to bottom on my spine. Worse than all those surgeries put together was the killer staph infection I got after the very last back surgery in September 2010. I spent 7 1/2 weeks on IV antibiotics that were so strong they almost finished me off. The nurse that came out every Monday to draw blood told me this about the $915 shot I had to take every day: "The good part is that it will kill all the bad stuff, but the bad part is it will kill all the good stuff right along with it." It took me almost a year to recover from that infection. Today I'm still trying to recover from 3 surgeries I had in the last six months of 2024: June was kidney cancer, September a total right hip replacement, and December a total right knee replacement (which was the most painful recovery of the three). My left hip is shot too but it will just have to wait. I think I've been cut on enough for one lifetime. I have more I could tell you about, but these are enough for now. I hope I didn't bore you too much with my misery tales. I have figured out why they call retirement the golden years. You need a gold mine to afford all the doctor bills. Take care all.

I'm approaching 74. Considering all the military time, racing bikes, and stupid stuff that was done on a dare, lucky to be alive.
It's amazing how all the crazy stuff waits to catch up with you as one ages. Knee's are shot, arthritis in the hips, etc., but keep plowing ahead with the mindset of a 40 year old that I'm still OK and capable of doing whatever. In the end, nobody gets out of this mess alive, so I continue to enjoy life as full as possible.

Wow. You have been through a lot. Makes me feel like I should shut my mouth. Hang in there. You will be in my prayers.

I'll just try to remember to count my MANY BLESSINGS, instead of being mad about things I have no control over in this life. I'm fine overall especially for just turning 72 a couple weeks ago, the problem is with Miss LD. Poor kid is back in hospital again for an infection in her knee replacement. She has a liteny of health problems, but handles it far better than I ever could. She just gets extremely frustrated of this, If It's not one thing It'll be another. RA is probably the worst, along with other crappy stuff. I get frustrated because no matter what I do or try to do I can't make her better. I pray for patience, and I pray for her healing, but mostly I ask forgiveness for my rotten attitude. Mr Southern Shooter, my prayrs will also join Mr CE Jr.'s for you to be able to live a far less painful life. You sir have an amazing attitude, and I look up to anyone who deals with awful stuff as you do sir.
God Bless you Sir.

At 76, I have a favorite saying, "if I'd known I'd be around this long, I'd have done better maintenance"! That gets more true every year. Since my Vietnam days, I've had cancer, diabetes, bad joints, heart attacks and open heart surgery, colitis, neuropathy, and now I can't remember elephant dung. I figure it can't get much worse, unless maybe they close the V.A., then I'd be in real trouble. We gotta stick it out to the end!! I can still shoot pretty well though.

this just reaffirms a favorite saying of mine, golden years my ass! But I am sorry for all fellow fanatics issues but we are all here able to share the scars, I've been fairly lucky with major injuries, heart biggest issue, 5 bypasses, 6-7 stints, 7-8 heart attacks, I loose count, started when I turned 54, 70 now, still working 20-30 hrs a week, oh yeah, 2 ablations, one for Afib and one for a flutter, less than a year after bypass had the wires removed that tied my rib cage back together, body was rejecting them, only 3rd person my surgeon had that happen to in 20 years, other than this stuff, 2 elbow surgeries and one shoulder, after first elbow surgery, 2 weeks later broke up a fight on job site, completely shredded all that work, next surgery less than a week later, L4 and 5 gettin in bad shape, so far every 4-5 months get a shot of steroids in that spot and really helps, this not that big ass needle that takes awhile and one of worse things ever felt, didn't help much anyway, while I'm on a roll the going blind in right eye pretty annoying.

Probably not a bad idea seeing that us old guys that have lived(and still living)a good life there's gonna be some bumps and pot holes along the way, some bigger and deeper than others, would I have done anything different, heck yeah! I would have hollered at someone that didn't have their arm in a sling to go break up the fight!! All the best to all of you!

Dang I'm counting my blessings here. I'm still healthy at 72

That's awesome Bob, nothing wrong with being healthy that's for sure! I'm pretty good right now, most of this stuff happened before my 57th birthday, one heart cath after a minor attack and the 2 ablations were 5-6 years ago but smooth sailing since knock on wood, couple guys I shoot matches with around 82-83 and I would have bet younger than me, a good buddy at work, motor grader and skid steer operator still works 60 hours a week, you guys definitely got the good genes!

I've never heard of it but think I'll give it a try lot of walking at work or wherever gets the L4 and 5 complaining pretty good, ibuprofen what I use now, guy in the video and you having positive results so yeah I will try, might help the right eye as well
