Nothing we do now will ever equal their sacrifice....Any action we would attempt would be labeled "racist" and quickly squashed as the rantings of mad men!

The problem is that todays Political Leadership is soooo left sided they only look at the slave thing was what the whole war was over....

The original problem was that Big Government was trying to tell the Citizens how to live every aspect of their lives....Sounds kind of like what is going on now....

City of Charleston did an emergency, temporary ban on Civil Rights and forbids the First Amendment for the next 60 days.

That, and the removal of Confederate flags, means that no black person will get murdered in South Carolina ever again.

Thank God. Finally some common sense action from government!

First of all, not trying to start an argument, just sharing my view as someone that grew up in Wisconsin, and has only lived down here for a few years. Nor do I want to start a North vs. South thing.

It's interesting to listen to both sides of the debate on whether the confederate flag should be removed. I can understand both arguments, though I'm sure it's easier for someone who isn't emotionally connected to it. I don't really have an opinion either way, if it should stay or go. The media has definitely turned this into a national race war, because that gets more ratings than a mentally ill kid killing nine people in a historic church.

Whether it is taken down or not will probably not effect my life at all, so I don't feel compelled to really express an opinion one way or the other. I will say that I am impressed with the lack of violence and protests. I applaud the people of Charleston for keeping the peace, even when people from out of state try to incite violence.

And lastly, history classes in school must be taught differently depending on where you go to school. From friends I've talked to down here, it sounds like the issue of states rights weighed much more heavily into reasons for the Civil War in the South than it did in the history classes I took in middle school and high school up North.

Anyway, hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers. Just some observations from someone that didn't grow up here.

Slavery still existed in the USA (The North) during and AFTER the Civil War. Not to mention that the Emancipation Proclamation ONLY freed slaves in the Confederacy, not the USA.

So the South seceded from the USA because they wanted to keep slavery... Even though slavery wasn't illegal.

Then the North invades and conquers the South to end slavery... But only in the South... And waits half a year before deciding to actually ban slavery for itself?

And the Fugitive Slave Act, repealed the year prior to the end of the four year Civil War, was actively enforced for three years, whereas runaway slaves in the North were returned to the South, but was done ironically, since the war was about slavery, apparently.

I don't feel like teaching a grown man history, especially when he's already convinced himself he's correct, but yes, the South seceded from the Union because the Republicans (who wanted to end slavery) won the election (Lincoln) without getting any electoral votes from Southern, slave holding states. The Republican party's desire was to end the expansion of slavery so that it would eventually die out. When the Southern states seceded, their congressmen resigned their seats, allowing the Northern congressmen to pass the legislation that was previously blocked by Southern congressmen.

I'll try to avoid getting into who attacked who first, because I'm sure that will cause even more disagreements. Though I'm sure you know about the Battle of Fort Sumter.

The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order, not an amendment. Are you really arguing that 6 months was too long, so that the North is somehow to blame for not making slavery illegal fast enough. How long do you think it would take to pass and ratify an amendment in 2015? Now think about how slowly information was transmitted back then.

Come on, you can't seriously believe the Civil War wasn't about slavery?

Fine, we both are guilty on that one.

Edit- after a quick trip to google to brush up on my timeline, I see it was passed in April of 1864, but ratified in 1865. It was also first discussed in congress in 1853. So, whether six months or four years is fast enough, at least it was passed, and it was the start of reconstruction.

The way things are going, we are closer to taking down the state flags and replacing them all with a single flag (but doubtfully Old Glory).

Don't go blaming the dad blasted Yankees, blame the whole country for all of this mess. I learned plenty enough about our Civil War as a kid to know what it was really all about.

In schools today they do not teach history any more, they teach opinions. Kids are not educated any more, they are only shown how to take standardized tests. This is the way it is now in the 21st century, welcome to the machine.

I'm not a yankee. State flags aren't going anywhere, and Old Glory will/should always fly in every state.
