I've been kicking this idea around for a little bit...

I sometimes ask if people have a holster set up for their off-side, in case they sustain an injury to their strong side. (not in a gunfight, that's another topic)

For example, a friend is having shoulder surgery and won't be able to use his right arm for 6 weeks. What is a good choice for a gun that'll be shot weak hand only?

I think it's a high capacity 9mm with minimal manipulations required, but maybe you think it's something else.

For the first Heartland Carrygun match in December, we will have a KYTAC emphasis, where the first certificate goes to a shooter that used a KYTAC holster they own for the entire match.

The second Carrygun Match will be the "Wrong Side Challenge!"

IT WILL BE A NORMAL MATCH!!

Shooters that decide to participate will shoot the match from their off-side. One stage will be one hand only for those shooters. The other stages will simply be "mirror image" where you can use both hands.

Who is up for the challenge??

The KYTAC match will be a great way for those that purchase a KYTAC between now and the match to practice with their new holster.

To easy! I shot like crap the last match and have no fear of shooting like crap again in ref to weak side shooting for I will have an excuse for my poor shooting skills! ;-) In times such as this I must ask everyone to step to the next bay while I attempt such a feat for their own safety lol

Both themes are fantastic ideas. Only thing better would be if you train those targets not to jump out of the way of my bullets ;-)

Count me in for using a RH holster with my HK P30. That's a pretty good gun for switching hands.

I have at least one LH 1911 holster that I can let someone use. I also have one for an HK P30 if someone wants to borrow that for the match.

I am in for shooting the entire match weak hand. Not sure my 1911 will be back in time to shoot with my KyTac holster though.

great idea.... you do a great job of keeping the matches fresh and exciting, much better job than i do in the bedroom!!!

I think both are great ideas.
I am in for both, with the same gun :o, different holster for the second challenge, but the same gun.

To clarify, if you elect to shoot Wrong Side, you need to have a holster on that side. No reaching across or behind to the strong side to get your gun.

Ideally, I'd like to run all four stages Wrong Hand Only, but the gun needs to hold 18 rds minimum to do it right.

I could allow two hand reloading with one hand shooting. Then any gun could play.

Thoughts?

So you can't draw strong side and transfer to weak side? WTH am I gonna do with a lefty holster after the match? Hope I break my right arm?

Now if KyTac were to have some deeply discounted left hand models available I might purchase one just do I can go dual draw, dual wielding or DDDW!

i would say lets not make it so strict that only a couple can participate. i would agree with Jesse (which was my plan) draw strong side and then transfer, it is still shooting the whole stage weak hand, in fact it is actually a disadvantage because it will take longer to draw and transfer than just being able to draw weak side....

Come to think of it I'm not even sure i trust myself drawing left handed

I see the safety aspect but that is the same with a less experienced shooter drawing strong side as well. Ref not having a weak side holster I can see where that could be a problem. How to even the playing field? You can not. AFA time with a weak side holster there is almost 6 weeks to find one and practice. myself I think I still have one from when I was loaning gear at matches, but I wont have time to put rounds downrange. The holster I think I have is for a small frame Glock and any can borrow it as long as Dave figures out how we can pass gear back and forth - on-line? Be slow but safe.
Great idea the weak side shooting - just have to figure a way to get the biggest bang for the buck.
Back in the day I would call it weak side match and allow those that didn't have the gear or feel comfortable to shoot the match strong side/free style though they would not be figured into any standings. You could also just run a strong side and a weak side Div as well. I would allow reloading and stoppage clearing using both hands and not worry about the 18 round cap. Just a view or two from the peanut gallery.

I don't want to label this match, per se, as many people read that then decide they don't have the gun to participate, so they stay home, even tho the next sentence read it's a normal match, shoot what you always do.

Obviously, jams can and WILL be cleared with two hands. Reloads can use two hands also.

I will allow strong side holster, draw and transfer this year....but no reaching across the body to draw the gun weak handed.

Thinking 3 stages weak hand only, one stage weak hand freestyle.

Everyone else can shoot freestyle....probably...

Sounds fun, I'm in if we can strong draw and transfer to weak hand. I can already predict MUCH larger groupings on the target

I'm in for weak hand only, with strong side draw.

And some of us don't have a strong hand!

Jesse - if you get your 1911 back, I can loan you a LH holster for it.

I guess a person could use an ITWB right side holster, on the strong side, and use it outside the waist band on the left side. Same holster. My Don Hume would work like this.
