Minimum handgun caliber is 9mm in this, IDPA (must drive awhile to find one) and USPSA nextt Saturday at OKCGC.

The only match I'm aware of that allows any handgun caliber is the Carrygun Match at Heartland Outdoors. They shoot the first and third Subday.

Those 5 poppers on Stage one kept turning, especially the second one from the right. When they faced the shooter correctly, they fell with no problem.

A lot of this problem can also be choke tube selection. Using an open or skeet choke may not get enough pattern to knock down the steel. I used Winchester #8 dove loads and a Light Modified choke and went 1 for 1 on all shotgun targets.

Interesting ... The shotgun I just bought has a choke, but I'm not sure what exactly it is. For fun shooting I usually use the #7 Federal bulk stuff from Walmart. That stuff work OK?

I was trying to help out by setting those things back up for awhile and there was one that was bowed pretty bad and made it lean forward. I think that's the one people were having trouble knocking down. The one on the far right kept sliding around and wouldn't stay up. lol

Any of the Saturday morning matches at OKCGC I'll probably try to start attending and learning how this stuff works. Saturday was the first time I've been out there and I really liked they're setup. I had no idea that place was so varied. OKCGC membership will be on my xmas list. heh :)

*edit: I have no clue why I just called it OKCGN twice. OKC Gun Nuts? dunno ...

Adam. That is the MGM star you are talking about, and it was at the ragged edge of handgun range for it,s design. I also haven't had time to bevel the triangle part of the plate where it goes into the bracket to help release when hit. There were a couple of times a marginal hit ( not centered or on an edge ) wouldn't knock off the plate, but I bet that the next time you all see a star at less than 30 yards from a bad shooting position it will seem real easy.

Yes one popper was turning, if you guys as shooters see this either turn it back, or get hold of me or Curly, Mike, Mike etc. And we will fix it. Most of the failure I noticed on stage one was folks going too fast and not getting a full pattern on it!

As for the little plates with the tab down the front, what Jesse doesn't like is a shot that goes under the physical plate wont knock it off when it hits the stand...well my thought is I don't want to reward misses, also if the front of the stand isn't protected the flat base will start to warp and then plates will spin. Yes you can use stands with a little tab in back, but now the whole thing gets much heavier and we are les inclined to put a bunch of them out in a jungle run. But is is fine not to like them

My matches aren't perfect, and they never will be, when I do design I guaranty they will challenge the heck out of you, and when you show up to some of these big matches you will say to yourself...hell yes I can do this cause those S.O.B.s at OKCGUNCLUB have already done worse to me.

Adam your 9mm will always be fine, but be warned with a marginal hit on steel it will ring but not fall just like it wont fall to 40, or 45. Sometimes it will take two or so kinda like somewhere else.

Guys I am not defending this, just letting you know how I see it. I should have staked down the poppers, I missed it during set up, but at the same time, if you see something wrong during the match be proactive or come get me, chances are I will say...your right let me fix that right now thanks for making this a better match.

after spending 300 dollars at CMMG, there really wasn't much (stagewise) that was "better" than the local match at OKCGC, certainly not 280 dollars better!! Just search for local 3 gun matches across the USA and you will realize there aren't that many, much less with the caliber of stages we have here. We are in a very unique situation here in OK. The stages are great, competitors are helpful, people aren't selfish with their gear and once i even saw cyrwus smile!!

Yeah, I'm not trying to criticize or anything. As an observer at my first match I thought it was great. I really liked how it wasn't just standing at 15 yards shooting paper. That long range rifle course was by far my favorite. :) I just want to understand how it works so when I actually do show up with some guns I won't be stumbling around wonder what's going on. lol I did my best at helping out resetting the courses so the actual shooters could, well, shoot and didn't want to start in on how your targets "SHOULD BE" in case they were like that intentionally. Next time I'll make sure to give you a hard time. haha ;)

My first stage was the long range, which meant my first shot was on the 300 yd steel.

After seeing how fast Kurt shot it, I thought I'd not dither on the first shot, either.

Tripped the shot at .42 after the beep. Hit!

The good news was, that was my best shot of the match.

Since it was also my first shot of the match, things only got worse from there.....

Hell of a way to open it though ... I watched several people go through before I realized what they were shooting at and had to verify with Wall on how the hell you guys even knew whether or not you were hitting it. lol :O

First 3 gun match for me as well. I cant imagine having more fun and the stages were both challenging and rewarding, esp stage 2. now if i could only hit at 300 yds...

thanks for all of the hard work you put into this Kurt. its well worth the drive from Enid and my buddy Lance and i will be back for plenty more.

Kurt, that was my first three gun match and it was a hoot. Ok, it's just been so long that it felt that way. There is a reason so much money and so many prizes come back to Oklahoma from major matches. It's the crazy stuff that we do that makes us better shooters. Thanks Kurt for the match and thanks to the folks behind the scenes like Curly, Will, etc that are egging him on to create the craziness. :)

I gotta know if shooting under a barricade is really that much more difficult, or was I just really bad at that one? I was just starting to get some confidence shooting my M&P40 Pro, or I thought I was and this stage comes up. 11 targets and it took me right about 40 rounds and 2 reloads. Aside from the missing, I shot it the same way I saw our Grand Master Chris Anderson shoot under the fence railing at a 3gun match we had earlier this year, I dropped staight down to my knees and facing the targets head on. I'm just saying, I've shot steel much better on my feet than I did this time around. I know it was designed to challenge us, I'm just not sure if it was me or the shooting position, or both. I'm not sure if that was a confidence builder for me or not.

As for your match designs, I knew there was a reason I hold resentment towards you, but I had to give you a like on that reason anyway.

Ok, it really was not that difficult to make the shots under the stick. I didn't test out the position prior to my turn, so the first time I did, it was on the clock.

Happily, it wasn't as tight as I thought it might be, but a taller person might've felt a bit compressed. In which case, those were a lot of fairly precise shots to make while being awkwardly uncomfortable.

I saw at least one guy go prone and he hit pretty well.

I'm 6'1", not extremely tall but shooting under the sticks was hard for me. I tried kneeling but kept missing and knew I was going to knock off one of the sticks. My major PF .40 loads kept tapping the sticks with the recoil. I finally went prone and shot the Texas star clean in five shots but still took a bunch of shots on those small plates. Had I focused more on the front sight and a consistent trigger squeeze I would have done much better. It was a great exercise.
