What's you opinion on "shooters choice"?

At first I thought it was kind of cool, then I was indifferent, now I think I'm finding myself somewhat opposed to the inclusion of so many "shooters choice" style stages in recent matches. A few stages set up to allow the shooter to select which weapon to engage the targets with is cool, but I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that for me "shooters choice" is code for "prepare to have your ass handed to you by all the competative pistol guys"... I like 3 gun because it forces you to be proficient with ALL 3 GUNS...I'm not the best/fastest pistol guy in the world, but usually I can make up some ground when it comes to shotgun and rifle. The last few matches I've been to you were never forced to reload shotgun on the clock and many stages could be shot without ever picking up your shotgun and/or rifle... Many stages can be shot the absolute fastest by minimizing the use of shotgun/rifle and I think this is forcing shooters to try to engage as much of the stage as possible with the pistol just to have a chance at a competative time for the stage... Not sure i am the biggest fan of this trend...

I agree. The pro series is shoot 9 rounds of shot then dump your shotgun and spray billets with your pistol. The shotgun loading is getting neglected.

Plus I don't want to make it easy on the pistol crowd coming in. The need to earn it.

Are they thinking along the lines of shoving shells in a shotgun not being good TV or trying to draw more USPSA shooters?

They are thinking some guy shoving shells in a shotgun is not apealing to the viewers. I'll bet you hit the nail on the head.
The way reality TV is now, I'm not suprised they don't have a couple of guys throw down and duke it out after the match like the NASCAR drivers do.
Get a little human drama on the show.

I don't like choice on every stage. It really turns the match into a two gun match and gives a big advantage to the pistol shooters. I don't need all three guns on every stage either but the overall match should have a balance between all 3 guns. Single gun stages are fine also but at the end of a match I want to get tested equally between all 3 guns.

Yeah 3 gun nation is a made for tv version of 3 gun. The viewers attention span is short. The shooting needs to be fast and the stages need to be furious.

But having big matches mimic that isn't very appealing.

Cajun000007 hit the nail on the head.

I'd like to see some optional two on paper with pistol or two with buckshot or one slug or stuff that really causes me to think rather than just know I can't load my shotgun as fast as I can throw 3 rounds of pistol at a target in the same time.

Hey, I can usually watch the full 30 minutes without losing focus! Usually....

While I'd rather not have every stage be a two gun stage and I don't like every stage to be a three gun stage either!

Most of you are too young to have any knowledge of the SOF match, where single gun stages were part of the menu.

Oh and the thinking that if given a choice pistol shooters dominate…ahahahha not so boys! I just finished my notes from the first Pro match of the year and EVEN pistol wizards Daniel Horner, Taran Butler and Keith Garcia picked…wait for it….SHOTGUN over pistol on a 16 shot array!!!!

So, let us not deal in absolutes…The real bottom line is COURSE DESIGN if your stage design crew is LAZY you get crappy stages.

Choices are fine when applied properly.

I agree with you Pat that stage design is a big part of any match. That's especially true when trying to make targets optional with two different guns.

I'm still struggling with being able to beat another shooters pistol with my shotgun or vice versa. I like the idea of gaming a stage design but gaming the guns feels a lot like the old 9mm vs. .45 arguement for home defense.

I do like how the options make it easier on new shooters to have more fun being competitive as they learn all 3 platforms.

Like everything there is a trade off. This sport is evolving fast and that's a lot of fun!

I just read this in Hulk Hogan's voice. :-)

I like having a choice once in awhile when the stage design makes you actually think about which would be best, and on other stages having that choice removed adds a bit of difficulty on its own. If you have shooters choice on a stage where there's 18 6x6 steel at 15 yards, no-one is going to choose a scattergun unless there are a ton of doubles. Thats too obvious.

At 2012 MW3G, round shotgun targets were close to square pistol targets....no choice, and if you knock over a pistol target with your shotgun...penalty.

At Noveske in Colorado this year, there was a stage with paper in front, left, and right....with steel front, left, and right of various sizes. Each "set" of targets was a "run" and the only rules i remember were that you had to shoot at least one run with each gun, and finish with a long gun in your hands...only one dump barrel and a dump trash can for pistol. Some of the targets were smaller steel at a little distance....I opted to shoot them with pistol, and should have opted for shotgun!
