Well-Known Fanatic
Here's how to sight in a new scope without even a good benchrest and without firing a round. Of course there are various boresighting devices, but none of the claim to do more than get you on paper.
1. Start with a known sighted optic mounted.
2. Install a rail mounted laser on the rifle, not on the optic.
3. Align the laser dot to the crosshairs.
4. Remove the old and mount the new optic.
5. Align the crosshairs to the laser dot (at the same target distance).
Voila! You're done!
