Would I get by with my stock AR carbine and 870? One concern I have is carrying reloads. Or just be safe and take my time? Iron sights on AR, I figure if I can see it I can hit it.
Thanks,
B

Its not the gear its the shooter that wins, it is to much fun to sit there and say man if i only had the right gear!!! Come shoot with us and gear can come in time...Besides look at all the gear everyone uses then buy i spent over 4k before i bought the right AR, Shotgun and pistol plus all the gear i bought was wrong...

The guns make no difference at the starting stages of 3-gun. You need experience and that alone will make you a more mature shooter and it will help you decide what gear fits you as Freedom Shooter said. Take what ya got and have fun, get trigger time on other peoples guns and find out what feels good to you.

Bring it out and shoot. There is no such thing as the right guns or gear.

What 3 gun does do is give you a reason to buy more guns and gear!

Most everyone around here started out with a 16" carbine and pump shotgun. Come out and join us.
That brings up an interesting point. Why does everyone have a 16" carbine and a pump when they are obviously not the best guns for 3 gun. Are they the best guns for any job around the house/ranch or are they simply the cheapest and most available? Ill start a new thread and get done discussion going.

They're the most tacti-cool guns out there that's what most people start with and then they find competition later

Probably the biggest thing you'd notice right off the bat is if you have a bunch of excess weight. So if you have a bunch of stuff hanging on it, take it off.

I borrowed a shotgun from Jesse, and a belt, mag holders, and extended Glock mags from Corey.

With this group of guys you could probably show up with nothing but ammo and still shoot. Lots of helpful advice too.

And have one Hell of a good time doing it!!!

Alright, I'll give it a try! I can wear cargo pants first few times. The guy that designs the Rockcastle stages is from my home club. It would probably be a crime not to shoot.
Thanks,
B

I am a newbie to this sport having now shot a grand total of 3 matches. The first one I didn't have a shotgun with capacity so the MD let me use his knowing I was a first timer. On one stage with 18 shotgun targets I had to reload from my cargo pants pockets. As I was digging the shells out, and loading them one by one I turned to the RO and said "you like my loading technique? I can hook you up with one of these..."

I recommend that you get with the match director and see if you can help setup the stages. I have done that on two of the three matches I've shot. While it hasn't helped my overall time come down, it is a great opportunity to learn how to approach the stages and you can get some good intel on gear, techniques and such.

Keep in mind this is from a guy with a metric elephant dung ton of gear.
