great question. i was kinda wondering that myself....i almost bought an M&P 9 last week and my buddy kept telling me to buy the 40 instead. not sure which to get...
I just got a M&P pro 5in in 9 a few days ago. Ammo is cheaper on the 9 unless you are reloading. They do have conversion kits but I'm not sure how good they are.
I had to make the same decision, so this is quite new. I stuck with 9 and am happy - so if you are happy with your decision, either will work.
Winchester factory loads - $20 for 100 at walmart 115gr 9mm
- some matches will use up over 200 and 40 is a bit too much for the bank to handle.
- buds gun has the M&P pro for 564 5 in in 40 or 9. - 9 has hiviz F/O 40 has Novak nights with F/O front
I believe if you can afford more than one gun then a 9mm is an excellant decison based on ammo cost. I purchased an M&P in 40 for the same reasons Jesse referred to, the ability to shoot more classes. You decide what's best for you and run with that not what others are doing. Have fun with whatever you decide
i shoot 9mm for the heartland match but i shoot a M&P pro .40 for uspsa.... if you shoot the 9 in uspsa you have to download to 10 rounds (which means a ton of reloading) so for me i just like to load up and shoot and not try to plan 3-4 reloads per stage.... the best is just to have 2 handguns 1 9mm, 1 .40, and shoot the caliber necessary for the situation..
I shoot 9mm in Production and Open Division in USPSA and outlaw 3 gun. I hope to shoot 9mm major and eventually .38 super in Open. I shoot .40 S&W in Limited, Limited 10, and occasionally Open divisions and 3 gun in USPSA. I shoot .45 ACP in Revolver division and hopefully some day in Heavy Metal 3 gun. I will us my 9mm guns for unsanctioned matches because of the extra ammo capacity and cost.
I am going to be shooting .22lr in alot of the rifle matches and steel challenge matches.

I've shot 9mm, but once I can find a way for regular pistol match attendance, I anticipate moving to .45ACP due to using my 1911. I'm assuming I'll be getting faster shots due to the better lock-time, but if I don't I'll sell it and revert back to the custom G17. I'd like to try shooting one with a 1911 in 9mm, too. That seems like a hot ticket.
I shoot a .40 in USPSA Production. (Glock 35) If you reload, it makes a lot of sense. My .40 minor loads are softer shooting than factory 9mm.
If I want to shoot Limited or L10, it takes about 2 minutes to bolt on the magwell and break out the extended mags, load it up with major PF ammo and be ready to go.
