I stole this from another forum (68forums). What are your opinions?
Thought this would be an interesting topic to contemplate. As I've been drafting a letter to my reps, I've been mulling over possible solutions that would appease both sides of the issue; for inclusion in my letter. We've all heard what both sides of the argument WANT to do about it, but what are you shooters really willing to accept in the form of gun control legislation? My list is below. Discuss, but please try to keep this thread from devolving into the usual Antis = bad guys, Pro-gun = good guys; there's already enough of that happening in our country.
What I would LIKE to see happen:
-NICS checks for all private transactions. My understanding is you have to have a check through an FFL, but not the private transactions. I've never been a party to a private trans, so I may be mistaken here. Correct me if that's the case. Disagree. I would like to see this NOT happen.
ETA: -The option for teachers to carry concealed, pending completion of a CPL course, additional intensive training for shooting in a school environment, and approval by the principal and school board. Agree on the first couple parts; disagree with the approval of the principal part. Undecided on the school board approval. My caveat on that would be: only if it was made up of parents with children in that school.
-CPL holders are allowed to carry in gun-free zones. Michigan just tried to pass legislation like this, but it was very poorly worded for a state that also allows open carry with no permit. Agree.
What I'd be willing to put up with:
-Mandatory completion of a firearms safety course for ALL gun buyers (CPL course an acceptable substitute) Bullshit. Might as well enact complete firearm registration. And just remove the 2A, since that would make it a privilege to those who could afford it.
-Waiting periods of up to 7 days for both handguns AND rifles. No. Not as offensive as some ideas, but still, how many shootings would this really stop? A handful, if that, per year; out of thousands.
-A ban on true high capacity pistol and rifle mags such as the drum mags (which never work anyway) and the extended glock mags Absolutely not. For any mass shooting in recent history, mag capacity wouldn't have likely change much, if any, of the results.
-A ban on slidefire/bumpfire type stocks and crank type trigger adapters (like those for the ruger 10/22) Why?
-Requiring a purchase permit signed by local LEO's for the purchase of any pistol or semi-auto rifles/shotguns (like MI used to have, but just overturned) Again, why? This basically puts your 2A rights in the hands of local LEO. Not that I dislike them, but it is not their responsibility to protect my physical or civil security; why then should they have the keys to my ability to do that?
-More detailed background checks on purchasers of pistols and semi-auto rifles/shotguns. If they pair it with a waiting period you would be delayed anyway, so why not take a closer look a gun buyers? Again, what would this have changed, and how would this help prevent other crime? How many regular criminals purchase legally now, and how many first timers like the VT shooter and the CO theater shooter would still not have been caught? Not to mention "crimes of passion" where the shooter may have no criminal history, or already owns the gun. This is just one more thing that makes it more intrusive for law abiding gun owners.
What I would put up with ONLY if it meant losing my guns were an alternative:
-Registration of semi-auto firearms. Absolutely not. None of their business. I disagree with Class III registration as it is. Besides, most of the mass shootings the shooter is probably assuming they will die, so they don't care if it's registered anyways.
-A ban on magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rds. Absolutely not. For any mass shooting in recent history, mag capacity wouldn't have likely change much, if any, of the results.
What I WILL NOT tolerate under any circumstance:
-Confiscation of any kind
-Classifying semi-auto firearms as NFA items and requiring registration
-Diane Finestein as a dinner guest.
What do you guys think?
