The 2013 Assault Weapons Ban Thread

I sold all my guns to a guy on the street today. He gave me 50 bucks for them all because I can't afford the $200 per item retroactive tax. I'm gonna hold onto them until he comes and picks them up. Hopefully he doesn't have a boating accident too.

Thought this would be an interesting topic to contemplate. As I've been drafting a letter to my reps, I've been mulling over possible solutions that would appease both sides of the issue; for inclusion in my letter. We've all heard what both sides of the argument WANT to do about it, but what are you shooters really willing to accept in the form of gun control legislation? My list is below. Discuss, but please try to keep this thread from devolving into the usual Antis = bad guys, Pro-gun = good guys; there's already enough of that happening in our country.



What I would LIKE to see happen:

-NICS checks for all private transactions. My understanding is you have to have a check through an FFL, but not the private transactions. I've never been a party to a private trans, so I may be mistaken here. Correct me if that's the case.

ETA: -The option for teachers to carry concealed, pending completion of a CPL course, additional intensive training for shooting in a school environment, and approval by the principal and school board.

-CPL holders are allowed to carry in gun-free zones. Michigan just tried to pass legislation like this, but it was very poorly worded for a state that also allows open carry with no permit.



What I'd be willing to put up with:

-Mandatory completion of a firearms safety course for ALL gun buyers (CPL course an acceptable substitute)

-Waiting periods of up to 7 days for both handguns AND rifles.

-A ban on true high capacity pistol and rifle mags such as the drum mags (which never work anyway) and the extended glock mags

-A ban on slidefire/bumpfire type stocks and crank type trigger adapters (like those for the ruger 10/22)

-Requiring a purchase permit signed by local LEO's for the purchase of any pistol or semi-auto rifles/shotguns (like MI used to have, but just overturned)

-More detailed background checks on purchasers of pistols and semi-auto rifles/shotguns. If they pair it with a waiting period you would be delayed anyway, so why not take a closer look a gun buyers?



What I would put up with ONLY if it meant losing my guns were an alternative:

-Registration of semi-auto firearms.

-A ban on magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rds.

What I WILL NOT tolerate under any circumstance:

-Confiscation of any kind

-Classifying semi-auto firearms as NFA items and requiring registration

-Diane Finestein as a dinner guest.

What do you guys think?
 
for me personally i don't prefer, but would have no issue registering every gun i have and waiting a month if necessary if i can keep all my "hi cap" guns including my 47 round AR mag.. i have a big issue with banning true hi cap pistol and rifle (when has this ever really been an issue), because if someone wanted to make a claim that my STI 20 round .40 mag was hi cap they would be right, much less once i get into open....
 
Too many people act like giving something up is a foregone conclusion. The only proposed legislation that we've seen is just Feinstein being Feinstein. Saying "this is what I'd be willing to give up if I have to" is premature.

Besides, it's Oklahoma. It's not like our legislators need to be reminded that voting for gun control measures will shorten their careers.

Matt- I lived in Michigan back when they still had that silly safety inspection -registration.

When my son turned 18 I "gifted" his handguns to him. We went to the SO to get the guns off my records and into his. Out of 5 pistols ... 3 were not in the data base- and I had green cards for them. The Clerk told me that happens all the time- the State did not really know who had what in a lot of cases and it was not the first time she had seen this happen. So, why did I pay a $5 tax to own a handgun?

Tying ownership to a fee or tax would be prejudicial--- the ACLU of all folks will tell you that. Paying a tax on self defense (Carry permits and gun registration) would simply price most of us out of the gun game. A CCW cost me about $250 this last move- and I am glad I could pay it.

Feinsteins taxes on guns would send me for a second mortgage. I'd have to cough up over $6000 to stay "legal"- plus they know "EXACTLY" what I have.

As for the rest of the compromises your in favor of- NUTS! These people wont stop till they disarm us all... and throwing a bone sets up a divide and conquer scenario they want to establish anyway.

100 round magazines don't make crazy people shoot up movie houses or murder little kids.
 
Jeff, I didn't claim that I was "in favor" of any of this. I pulled this over from someone else's thread on another forum for discussion. It was another member that authored it.
 
I say no to all of it. Why should my rights be infringed on because a person with a mental problem or no moral standards. The best way fix the gun problem is have more severe punishment for gun crimes. A new gun law is not going to prevent someone who wants to commit a crime from getting a gun. Drugs are illegal, it's illegal to drive drunk, it illegal to kill, steal etc, but it happens every day. Our system is F'ed, hard labor or death, no more gyms, tv, Internet, health care, etc. I should not have my rights change because of a asshat.

This would be impossible to control without first registering all guns. The reason it works with the FFL is because at that point the gun is in the "system" & there is traceability of who has it. Once it is sold to a private party if it's re-sold it's no longer traceable unless it is transferred through an FFL again at some point.

Hi Cap is a matter of perception. What about a 60 or 100 round surefire mag for 3gun or 2-30 round mags coupled together. Those don't seem so Hi Cap to me but they do to many of the people writing these bills.

Any kind of concession is a step in the wrong direction that leads to the end that none of us want.
I personally won't be happy with any change to the gun laws that make things less accesible than they already are.
 
I'm against all of the proposed compromises. The rules on guns are never ending . If you give in to this, it will only lead to the left wanting more rules . My proposed compromise to this is less rules, less regulation . With this as a starting point, may be we can keep what we have .
 
Yeah, If what a bad(crazy) person might do with something to someone after they murder someone else to get it becomes the means test for an items safety, then out go all your sporting goods, kitchen utensils, lawn equipment, transport of any kind.
 
If the gun grabbers want "compromise" they will have to give something huge in return. Compromise is BOTH parties GETTING something they didn't have to begin with. You want to register all my evil black rifles and mags? Fine. But I get to make them full auto/select fire/SBR/SBS and suppressed if I so choose with no further stamps AND you are giving up ALL of the restrictions in FOPA.

I'm sick and tired of "compromising" with these jerkwads and getting nothing back. Until they are willing to do that, they can STFU...

My Dad wrote and voted and educated. Research and understood what was/IS at stake! This ain't some "oh just be a good boy and you can keep some of your rights" This is a BIG threat to be reduced into a smaller compromise that we can all swallow…YOU ****ING swallow it!

Not get off your compromise asses and write you congress people today! Then do it again next week and then again! Phone them if you like.

This crap is got me spun up! Not so much the proposed legislation but the attitude of many on this (one of the best forums) and other forums!

I have no intention of a compromise! that would give them a chance to take more down the road. They want to do something about the media which seems from what I have seen to be the true problem, when they want to actually punish these people who commit these crimes maybe, if they would have public hangings for the people who are convicted of crimes like these possibly. So let's start off with public hangings covered by the media then we wouldn't have to worry about stupid crimes a couple years down the road IF there is a reason these folks will know there is a chance if they get caught something might actually happen to them other than free room and board along with cable TV. I believe the second amendment is what it is and trying to legislate it's relevance is only going to be met with the kind of response that nobody in this country wants to see. I really hope they consider the repurcussions before they do anything stupid. There's enough for people living in this age to worry about without adding civil unrest on top of it.
