Do I need 5 mags for steel challenge?

Not really. You will shoot 5 strings at each stage. Each string will consist of 5 steel targets. If you don't miss you can get 2-3 strings from one magazine. If you miss some, you might only get 1-2 strings from a magazine, depending on how many your mags hold.

You can reload mags in between stages, there isn't really time between strings to reload. I would say you can get by with 3 magazines unless you have a GOOD friend reloading magazines for you in between strings

Around my neck of the woods, most use the midway pistol case. Inexpensive, and has mag pouches sewn in.

Yup, I easily get by with 3 15 round mags, since luckily OK isn't a limited capacity state.

I decided to try using mag pouches once, just for kicks, but by the third stage I had taken them off and was just laying my mags on the starting position table.
