ShootzenFest gathering at Philsons December 14

OK - I'm learning. Are you making assumptions or have you personally experienced melting of the chamber checkers? If its fact, then we'll need to figure out another way to show 'clear'.
It really depends on how long the are and what material they are made of out. The cheap ones melt.

The guns are usually locked open and left on the benches pointing down range or propped up against the wooden rail to use the chimney effect to cool the action faster. Or the barreled upper will be removed and sat aside to let cool and another upper will be put on the MG.

Ok. How about I make some non-plastic ones for the MG's and we use the plastic ones for all the other guns?

I'll figure out what material to use and test in my AR to ensure it fits and does not mar or otherwise cause damage.

Of course, any removed upper is not capable of firing, so its not a problem to be without a flag...

Thanks!

It is entertaining listening to all the ideas. They are all good until we get there and just start shooting.

General, you have to remember this is a public range and many others will show up. We are all on the safe side, but the public shows up and may fire a round behind the lines.

Good luck

I'm going to come out look forward to meeting everyone. 2XL for me. I think I'll have heavy barrel Mosin complete by then in the permanent stock if not the temporary stock will have to do. I haven't bothered to zero it yet though. I also just got a Finn M39 for all you MilSurp guys.

What's the policy on incindeary rounds?

@Tiger the SMK 174g .311 are what a lot of the Mosin guys reload but some on that board have been petitioning SMK to make a 200g .311 so please email SMK telling them you wan a heavy bullet. What is it you are putting a can on that shoots .311 anyway, an AK?

ive seen some 200 gr .311 bullets. not cheap. yes heavy bullets for the can. 174 gr might work. i dont have an AK. i have a 762x39 upper and an M-16 lower. :D

id say nobody has any problem with a "match" but after being at a shootzenfest you might see how it doesnt work well.

i believe it was D+R that wanted to have a shoot off and give prizes last spring. somehow i missed it as did others. to get everyones attention and try to coordenate is the problem. there are lots of people and they are wearing hearing protection.

maybe an air horn would be nice if just to stop the firing to go down range.

as for breach plugs i might have one plastic one. i think we have relied on people to watch their own saftey. maybe thats not the best idea but there will be a lot of guns there. if need be i would put an empty case holding open a bolt.

im not saying we are dangerous but to the General i think you see a nice organized range. i see it as more of a controled madhouse. fun, but everyone has to keep there eyes open and not be bothered if someone sees something to be addressed and says something about it. example, fingers out of trigger guards. there are a lot of fingers going to be there.

just my thoughts. ill go along with any saftey suggestions. nobody wants something to happen that might cause a problem with future events.

General,
Just having someone to keep an eye open and calling the range hot/cold is a great help. As Jeff said, when the shooting starts in the morning, it usually continues non stop. I've seen ShootzenFests where the range was called cold maybe 4 times all day long.

We've tried to do shooting matches in the past. Jeff at P1 Ammo brought targets and offered to sponsor a best shot match with a prize. It got lost in all the noise.

It's a great idea, we just have yet to pull it off. One year we had a sponsor bring a bunch of suppressed firearms and no one could hew how quiet they were. Yes, I know that was an oxymoron.

We agree to leave at least some of the benches open for the general public. I've not seen a problem from the locals, but I have seen one or two move to another range. The Sumter National forest actually has 4 ranges in it. I've never been to the any of the others.

Bring lots of ammo.

Also, and I'll say this again later, People bring their favorite guns to share with people. Its considered friendly etiquette to bring some fresh practice ammo, even if only a magazine or two. People have been extremely generous with their toys so throw an extra box of .223, 762x39, .45, whatever you would like to shoot.

Personally, I'm hoping to get a look at for some1911's in .45. I don't own one currently, but I'm in the market for one. I'm sure there'll be several at the shoot.

I've attended the Shootzenfest in the past - I know that it's mostly controlled mayhem!! LOL

We have discussed Range Safety Officer in the past - It's mostly to help remind folks of their responsibilities to keeping the day safe, but we've never actually implemented it.

We've all been to ranges before and observed unsafe practices - Most folks are simply ignorant of what is expected of them. If we give folks a gentle reminder and we (PSF) monitor ourselves, then we're that much safer.

Range Nazi I am not (LOL). I just want to help make the day safer and everyone goes home with the same number of holes they arrrived with.

As a personal example, wife and I were at Philsons for a free MG shoot (about 6 years ago - Before shootzenfest) and I'm in line waiting to shoot and another shooter is standing behind me with a Short Barrelled shotgun, loaded, finger on the trigger, aimed at the back of my head!! I didn't know, but the wife saw it. She simply asked him to point it straight up. Since he had never shot a gun before, he said "Oh, OK" and complied. Simple ignorance and everyone went home healthy.

It's that rather than "You touched a gun before I granted you permission to breathe" Nazi crap....

Now, back to the fun: Who can think of some fun reactive targets to scatter around that everyone can shoot at (and enjoy)? If anyone has any extra pumpkins, they're a riot to shoot (and naturally biodegradable)! Tennis balls, golf balls, 55-gallon barrel (plastic or metal), 5-gallon pail, sheetrock 'puff' boards (hanging vertical), cheap Walmart soda cans (shaken and room temp).

I'm going to have to miss this one, sad to say. I'd like to trade Clicker the 69grain .223 SMK's and get a box of Garand fodder to Fordnut beforehand - I know Fordnut is relatively local to me. Not sure whereabout Clicker is. (I'm near Otranto).

Good news is that I'll be taking my Korean-war-vintage Garand (with refinished stock) to let my Grandfather-in-law, who is a Korean war vet, shoot it. He was on the Army's marksmanship team when he was in; I've personally seen him shoot so I have no doubts about this. So I'll get some shooting time anyway, and a day shooting a Garand is always a good day.

General notes on 'Fest:
1. If a sponsor (or several) could provide, either by buying one or loaning one, a bullhorn for the RSO that would be a huge improvement. With multiple NFA guns and varying ear protection just shouting "COLD" sometimes doesn't cut it.

2. Needs to be two designated RSOs, so they themselves can take turns watching and shooting.

3. While the shooting competition is a grand idea, in practicality it falls apart. Too much blasting to do any real precision work. I also see folks at the outdoor ranges do not generally respect target ownership, but that is a different issue above and beyond the leadstorm that is shootzenfest.

4. Chamber flags for high-speed guns can be made with pure teflon block or carbon fiber sheet (the stiff epoxy-cured type). Sort of exotic but not too hard to find. IMHO all shooters should have a flag for their gun if they're going to shoot it at a public range, but I myself don't have one for every rifle and none for pistols. I would have the RSO make sure all assembled long guns are leaning against the rail (muzzle up) before letting anyone go downrange, and pistols are locked open/cyl out.

5. The AD last time was a non-forumite that showed up at random, and he shouldn't have been shooting anything (on crutches and shaky from meds). The RSO has to watch for folks not-of-our-fold and make sure they don't do something like this too.

On a personal note, I was right next to the guy (well behind the firing line) and got muzzle blast to the back of my head. It *does* get your attention.

6. Best targets are those $30 poly reactive deals. If half the folks brought one we'd have enough out there for anyone to chase, and they're nigh indestructible. But, the .22-only ones are colored differently and should not be blasted by centerfire stuff. Let folks know.

The ranges have rules on what you can shoot and usually not allowed to shoot reactive/interactive/metal/causing trash targets. You'll see the remains of plenty of both strewn around the range, which is part of what is cleaned up. Be like a scout - clean your mess, and leave it cleaner than you found it. I've had fun shooting gallon milk jugs full of frozen water at 100 yards with expanding bullets. They're also easy to clean up when you're done.

I think it would be good for each person to familiarize themselves with the USDA rules for the range. These are posted at the range and on line.

Here is a partial list. ------
- All weapons must meet South Carolina firearm safety standards. For more information go to http://www.dnr.sc.gov.
- No alcoholic beverages.
- No tracer or incendiary ammunition.
- Skeet and trap shooting is not permitted.
- Shoot only at proper targets mounted on self-provided stands or holders.
- Shoot only from the firing line, down-range and into the backstop.
- Shooters under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Properly dispose of litter, including targets.

exploding soda cans is cool but if DNR sees it they will fine you. i wonder if they will be told "we" will be there.

no metal targets etc.

as once before i have 2 trash cans i will bring.

 i call the table in front of the mud puddle.

Last fall a couple of guys from the Laurens County Sheriff's Department came by. They seemed to enjoy watching.

If DNR shows up, I'll have to duct tape my mouth to keep from asking about the "government shutdown" lockout and why it took so long to get
the gate back open.

Speaking of which - Do we want to consider a rain-postponement (by Friday afternoon) or do we hold it rain or shine???

It's gonna be warm (65 degrees) but thunderstorms can really suck if the sky opens up...

Looks like I will be able to make it if Clicker still has a space left. Planning to bring the 51k and 53 with the HK pack.

If you have any extra large left I would love one.

Thanks,
Jeff

Pops don't worry about his Tee I ordered him one weeks ago.

I'm worried about the rain at this point.

Lets hope for no rain...I really don't want to have to drive up there, then, have to eat 50 hot dogs on the way home...
