Phil Robertson suspended from A&E's Duck Dynasty.

I do believe in the first amendment. And Phil can say anything he wants to he has earned that right and just remember free speech is not free so thank veteran.

He gets paid to do the show and when there not filming A&E doesn't own him. So what he said in a magazine interview should not matter.
No, they don't own him, he is his own person. But if you honestly think that any employer should just sit back and let someone who represents them say things that may decrease their revenue you are mistaken.

If I get on a soapbox in front of my place of business and strip down nekkid or otherwise act like a lunatic then my employer may very well decide to get rid of me. If I make off color remarks to a client and it gets around then I may be canned. It has not one bit to do with the first amendment.

The funny thing is I doubt that guy gives two hoots about what A&E thinks, the man has plenty of money, I don't think he is losing one wink of sleep about this.

It's not a first amendment issue until the man is being punished by the state for saying something.

It is about the first amendment. We the people have that right .As long as he didn't say it on the show.

Unfortunately if you want to be a public figure you gotta walk the walk and talk the talk. Heck I get scrutinized for my words and actions and I'm just a piss ant 3 gun shooter with a fancy shirt.
I agree to some point, BUT, A&E signed a CHRISTIAN family from the south that can be described as rednecks for a REALITY show. They aren't paying him to play another character, they are paying him to be himself, unscripted (to some extent anyway). That is like signing Kanye and then getting mad that he cussed.

Okay man, try my challenge and get back with us. Bonus points if you call a female client sugartits.

Also please show how the government is in some way punishing him, since the first amendment does not apply to A&E. By all means disagree with the network or whoever took him off the show, stop watching it, write letters, etc.

Tru dat.
But they still sign the checks and have the contracts.
I'm pretty sure he will be happier fishing and hunting and preaching than screwing with numb nuts.
I sure as hell don't miss messing with EEEdjudts, as my grandpa used to say, and that was just a day job.

If his contract had public statement clauses, they were very much within their right to suspend him from the show.

I find it funny how the outcry has been over his statements about homosexuality, when the comments on race are far more offensive if you put more than a few seconds of thought into them.

I suspect this is the bottom line. He signed on to A&E to spread the beliefs the family lives by.

I will agree that this has nothing to do with the first amendment what so ever. The first amendment is for protection from the government.

If he went full blown stupid i would understand him getting canned but he didn't he was asked his opinion and he gave it. A&E knew he was all Hell, Fire and Brimstone when it came to his beliefs and that is one of the reasons they signed the family, heck if they wanted some redneck that duck hunts they could have found a million of them.

not a first amendment issue at all, as things like this become more common, the question becomes "can an employer fire you for religious beliefs?" If a Christian says he doesn't believe Muslims are going to heaven (or vice versa) and the boss is of the opposite faith, should/can that person be fired for stating that?
these are the types of questions that really matter, with privacy going away and political correctness at an all time high, what is the line on what an employer can do? If you post on facebook that liberals are ruining this country, and you boss is a liberal and sees it.... can he fire you?

In Oklahoma he can. We are a fire at will state.
Whether you can be fired for no reason, when you did nothing wrong, depends on your employment status and specifically on whether you are an at-will employee. In most of the United States, employees are generally considered “at will” employees. At-will means that you or your employer can terminate your job on a moment's notice for any reason, whether good, bad, indifferent or for no reason at all. The law in most states presumes that an employee is at-will unless the employee can prove otherwise. This means that unless the termination violates federal or state law, company policies, or an implied contract, there is very little that an at-will employee can do to protest a termination without a reason.

One of the reasons you can't be fired in Okla. is discrimination. You can be fired for being a red head, but if there is another red head in the company, they have to find another reason.
Union Organization is another issue you can't be fired for. There may be one or two more, but if an employer really wants to get rid of you, they will find a way.
