Pawnee Winter Run 'n Gun - Jan. 18, 2014 - Pawnee, OK

When i was running cross country in high school (30 years ago WOW) most of the shin splints came from heel striking.

I ran cross country also & they never said a thing about hill strikes either. I always wondered how people could do Marathons, I am definitely going to share this info with my kids hopefully they will know life without shin splints lol

I hate to run. I suck at it. I'd rather ruck all week than run down the block and back. I'm a heel striker and had shin splints the whole time I was in the Army. It's like studying and taking tests in school: No one teaches you HOW to do those things, they just expect that you DO them. Same with the military (the Army, at least), and running. I was never taught HOW to run properly but you bet your ass I better not go on sick call to get those looked at. If I did, I better not come back on a running profile. Nowadays I don't have to put up with that crap. I can take time to recover properly and try new things to unf@#k myself. I still hate to run but I am trying to get better at it. This video is a great explanation and I'll be trying this technique to help myself along. Thanks for sharing it!

6.5 miles sounds like a long ways, but seriously we need somebody to run a pedometer at the proam when they do pistol & shotgun or okc gun club uspsa. That is a lot of back and forth in one day
I am glad Jeff fires up the grill at ussa & the ladies serve burgers @ okc. Grilled food & shooting lots of bullets always makes for a great day

Shin splints are NOT usually caused by stress fracture in the shin like i used to think. Some how it got the name i guess from the area of the pain.A lot of good stretching in that area and not over excercising will do wonders. A lot of stretching of the whole leg is really important in preventing and treating shin splints.

I made a beer run or two in high school which is probably why I can't run the 6 miles or so in this match.

This is an individual event, right?
I know that Texas A&M has a shooting team linked with their corps of cadets, and they do a collegiate match every year with the same premises, although it is a team event with 4 man squads, I believe.

Yes, this is scored individually... but if shooters want to run in small groups, we can accommodate that. We have had husbands run with wives, dads with kids, etc... at the Thunderbird Run 'n Gun last July, we even had 4 tac medics who ran the course with a "casualty" and simulated treating different injuries along the way. The way it works is that when the group gets to a station, the competitors shoot one at a time, and everyone who isn't shooting is running wait time. If you want to do this, you will need to tell us before we announce the run order in the morning.

I have met the A&M guys at the Pecos Run 'n Gun down in Texas, which they send several cadets to every year. One of them did real well this year, and took either 1st or 2nd if I remember right. They all had very nice equipment. Based on the way their rifles were set up, I bet their team also competes in 3 gun events.

how is this scored?
Your overall score is your percentile shooting time plus your percentile running time.

All the details on this event are on the website at www.okrunngun.com.

Some of you guys need to sign up and do this thing. It is really a lot of fun!.If an old fat grandpa can make it through the course in 100 degree summer heat, I know a lot of you can do it in the winter temps. When you are moving in the winter, you stay warm. You will enjoy it and it really lets you test your shooting skills and your fitness. And a bunch of this one is moving on the road....lots easier than moving though briars and brambles. I am sure there will be briars so don't wear your running shorts and shoes like I did at the last one and came in scratched to heck. Everyone was friendly and had a ball at the last one. Come on out!

This week we got all the target frames set up and plotted out the final layout for the course. Yesterday I got the strobe target indicator that will be used on the 500 yard shot so we don't have any issues with calling hits. The steel shipped yesterday as well. It's gonna be a good one... you don't want to miss out on this!

I actually ran 2 miles on the tread mill this morning @ 6 mph. I tried Sunday but only got 1.3 miles. I sure am hoping for good weather.

I know I won't be breaking any land speed records.

I hope the weather takes an unexpected turn and it gets nasty....that would be an experience and a test.

If it gets wet I need to rethink my tennis shoe situation or start spraying them with scotch guard now lol.
Rifle will way me down but I am rolling as light as possible with minimal ammo. Last summer guys were carrying 4-6 pmags, i just took 2 30 rd mags & 2 hi-cap/w extensions pistol mags. This time I am taking my bolt gun & we will see how that stacks up to those AR's. It would be nice if some of those 3 gunners would stay home this weekend, some of those Kansas 3 gunners are even coming down for this.

Weather is forcast for what, the 40's right now? I might actually bring a small pack in case I need to strip layers off.

The real show is going to be watching EK run his SBR AK at 500 yards. They should sell tickets to that portion...

Yep, I bought that very thing today... a small pack that will hold just my hydration pouch, my rain suit, layers of clothing, and minimal tools like a multitool, cleaning rod and extra lube. I figured I needed something that covers the gap between full LBE pack and just a war belt anyway.

I'm definitely looking forward to the 500 yard AK action as well! Personally I'm giving it a go with an AR + Aimpoint, which is enough of a challenge for me this time around.

I ran last July with one of the MARPAT patrol packs. It carried my hydro bladder, cleaning/parts kit, Sawyer Extractor, and a few spare mags. It definitely bridges the gap left by an LBE or belt. Wish I was running it with you guys but I'll see you in the summer heat. .
