I know this is a 1911 forum but I hope someone can explain to me the definition of '2011'. I believe STI started using that moniker to describe their double-stacks but the term seems to have grown legs to mean ANY 1911 double-stack. True or not?

To me the STI 2011 is only what you described never heard any different here double stack $$$ great pistol

When I was at Guncrafter, Derrick said STI owned the trademark or whatever it is called for 2011. They got permission from STI to use it on their double stack guns. I think I have that right..

Seems true to me . STI may own the name but I think you're correct . 2011 has become shorthand as a description of a double stack 1911 . A lot like Derringer became a way to describe a pocket pistol .

The moniker 2011 was meant to bring the original 1911 into the future, next century new rendition, the next step, so to speak. There was a "nitch" a market for reliable Hi-Cap compitition guns and this was the next generation in the 1911 platform, and from this also inspired the creation of the SVI line, both exceptional platforms for any use.

When the G.I. .45 came out in WW1 it was called the Model 1911. Everyone
still calls it the 1911 no matter who made it or how different it is from the
original.

I recall the first mention of a 2011 I'd heard was from STI , calling their Dbl. Stack pistols.
I have a Para P-14 ..(Dbl. stack 1911 .45) that I believe was made before STI started making & calling their models 2011's.
So there were Dbl. stack 1911's before STI, but seems they created the term 2011 to refer to the versions.
