I am new to Boomer Shooter and apologize up front for my ignorance. I am a newbie and would like to sign up for a match, preferably USPSA, and I have some questions.

I guess my general question is, how do I get started?

more specifically....

Do I need to sign up as a USPSA member to participate in a local match?

How do I determine what Division I am in?

Are there classes within divisions or am I shooting against experts/pros, etc?

I have looked for info on the web, but finding very general answers.

Thank you

You don't need to be a member of USPSA to shoot a USPSA match, but it will usually get you $5 off the entry fee..

Your division will be based on the type of gun you have and how many bullets your mags will hold. You should bring five magazines for whatever gun you bring. You just need a belt, a holster, and a pistol with magazines or a revolver. Magazine pouches aren't 100% necessary to shoot pistol, but they are 100% necessary to be competitive. Revolver shooters usually use moon clips in USPSA.

There are classes within divisions. Limited D, C, B, A, M, and GM, same for other divisions. A, B, C, D, M, and GM just represent percentages compared against other shooters. ABCD are just letters, but when you near the top you get an actual whole word or phrase to describe your ability to perform. M=Master, GM=Grand Master.

You should be able to find matches at USSA, since you're in Tulsa, and probably Oil Capital Rod and Gun Club. They have websites.

Random question off of this one. Something you said makes me think I've been overpaying. When the ask if I'm a member I've always assumed they mean of the range/club where the match is - USSA for example. Is the $5 discount fr members of USSA or USPSA?

The 5 dollars off is if you are a member of USSA.
