A significant number of military members and LEOs are "only ones," who feel that "only they" are well trained/responsible enough to possess them.

I can't speak for law enforcement, but the people I came in contact with over the past 10 years in the military most certainly didn't feel this way.

You were also an 11B, and you retired (and thus probably spent some time) in a deep red state.

The further you get from the tip of the spear, and the shinier the rank, the less pro-2A military people tend to get. Combat arms NCOs? Generally pro-2A. REMF FOBBIT pogue sr brass? Generally very risk averse and not so pro-2A.

Likewise, LEOs from big city blue state police departments are way different from those in more rural parts of South Carolina. Notice I did not say "a majority" feel that they are "only ones:" a significant number feel that way. Do you think every MP at Ft Jackson supports the 2A to the point of being willing and able to resign or disobey a questionable order (and risk courts-martial or NJP) over the issue? Do you suspect a "significant number" of NYPD would be willing to enforce the SAFE ACT in NY? Given that Cali Highway Patrol participated gleefully in Katrina Confiscations, I would wager that a "significant number" of them will confiscate in California.

Some refused to follow orders. There are some videos, especially of National Guardsmen, refusing to participate in any manner. But a "significant" number did feel just fine confiscating firearms, or watching others confiscate firearms, in the wake of a natural disaster when good guys needed them the most.
