Each town might be a little different, but usually if you live outside of the city limits of the town. and you have sufficient property size. and not living in a community with restrictions HOA. You are usually good to go for shooting. When you talk to your real estate agent make sure you tell them what you want

I suggest you stay close to family - Nothing like having family to lean on when you change your entire world - And believe me, moving from CT to SC will change your entire world!! (For the better).

I cannot overemphasis that you travel here to FIRST find jobs. Not the idea of a job, but an actual job with a start date. SC ain't CT when it comes to jobs. When I lived in NJ, a new job was a easy to find as walking down the street to any of the many firms. Here in the south, the jobs tend to be fewer and further apart. BTW: $15 / hour is a GREAT job (for un/semi skilled).

Your wife should do well as a Nurse. Not sure what Property Management means, but if you can turn that into your own company, you might want to give it a try.

Don't let yourself get fooled by the lower house prices - At first, you'll think that they are giving the homes away (compared to CT prices). But eventually, you will learn how much a house here is actually worth, and more importantly, can be resold. So, find they home you want: Don't spend more money than you should because the houses are so cheap...

You may have to consider private school for the kids depending on the quality of the schools in your town. Again, this ain't CT....

But definately, GET THE HELL OUT OF CT and never look back!!!!!

By all means look at school districts when you're thinking of buying. We have a 20% illiteracy rate for high school seniors in SC... so don't think "how bad could it be" for what otherwise looks like a great location and price.

Good luck Mike,

I got out the navy and fell into a Job with Norwich Public Utilities, so my dreams of ending my northern exile are on hold for about 20 years. I'd recommend Moncks Corner, but then again I'm awfully biased.

If I were you I'd find a utilities job down here. You don't want to be "outside the wire" when it really counts. I wouldn't move above southern Virginia or beyond Central Texas (not counting Wyoming/Montana) for anything.

Less money here is better than more money there to me

Well, you say that 11B, but right as I separated things went a little pear shaped. The Dear Leader's EPAnuts sent every southern utility into a panic over coal ash lawsuits. Queue the hiring freeze. Right now I have a secure job with decent benefits. Am I happy with everything in the DPRCt? No, but I'm going to hold fast for at least 5 years so I'm vested, and then the financial aspects of a job change may shift. Anyhow, I have occupied .79 acres of yankeedom, how can I withdraw in the face of the enemy now?

I had several months' notice with my medical discharge from the Army. It happened right when the big push to downsize started so rather than medical retirement with full benefits and post privileges I got severance. They rated me just under the percentage needed for retirement. 10 years of service as an Infantryman, two years in combat and another two as a drill sergeant and I was out on my ass. Fortunately my wife had health insurance working as a teacher I could get under and I sort of get seen at the VA although my appeal to go from 90% to 100% service connected will probably take another year or two. I can't work because my back is too jacked up and worsening daily because even after three surgeries, I just found out my pain meds gave me pretty serious osteoporosis. Fortunately I was able to get into a grad school program starting right when I was discharged so at least I get the GI Bill's monthly allotment. I went from bringing home $2500 every two weeks to $1300 once a month. I graduate in February.

Trust me, I know what "it"'s like, but I'd still rather stay here flat broke than move north for a job.

Trust me on this shipmate, I didn't "move" north, I was ordered north. There is nothing more I wanted than to come home. You can ask Dave29461 about me talking about it for the past 5 years, but when your choice is between something and nothing... I had something here; SCANA, Duke, and Georgia Power all had nothing for me when I needed it. Why do you assume that its just money that I'm after? I said it was a good job, nothing more. I love working in Utilities, I never have to wonder if what do I makes a difference. We all gotta make calls in life, stay or go, fight or run. You know that far better than I, I was never on the pointy end of the spear like you. I know you aren't trying to be offensive, but it kinda rubbed me the wrong way when I first read your posts.

I'm glad things are moving in the right direction for you now. I am thru the first round of VA exams myself.

Nothing I've said was meant to be offensive. We just have different priorities. You do what you feel is right and so do I. I have roots in SC dating pre-Revolutionary war (and who fought the British and then later the North). I'll sum up my feelings with the motto of the 2nd SC Regiment: Libertas Portior Vita. "Liberty is more important than life"
