I'd like something with a little more punch than my AR for deer season. I have a 30-30, but I want to be able to reach out a little farther if necessary. Would like .308, 7mm, .30-06 or something like that.

Price will be the biggest determining factor though, the wife is still looking for a new job so the toy budget isn't what it used to be right now.

Went to the ammo dump. And for the prices inside i hope whatever you buy comes with lube.

Id go go walmart in summerville. They have scoped bolt guns in your basic cali ers cheap.

I agree
Stopped by the ammo dump a while back. When I saw the $21 price tag on USGI ammo cans I didn't look at the gun prices!!!

Thought about a 300 AAC Blackout upper for your AR? If you're not familiar with this setup, you need to do some reading. :) As for a traditional hunting rifle, look at the .243 Winchester cartridge and also check out the Ruger American bolt action rifle.

Would that be as simple as switching the upper and magazines?

i dont believe you have to switch mags.

300 isnt going to reach out like a 308 will.

but, i like to get up close and personal with deer hunting. the closer in that 50 yds the better.

does in the head or upper neck and bucks right through the ribs and dont hit the leg on the other side. with a 308 instintivly they run about 50 ft and stop, dead.

300 AAC aka 300 BLK (sometimes compatible with 300 Whisper and 300 Fireball as well) is a 30 cal projectile in a necked up and shortened 223 casing, designed to fit your 223 AR mags. I'm sure it doesn't have the power of a 308 WIN, but it is a legitimate mid-sized game (whitetail) hunting round. It is also popular among the silencer (ahem, suppressor) crowd because it can be loaded subsonic with a heavy bullet. A member here gave me the pleasure of shooting his suppressed, and it didn't let out much more than a click. Sweet!

But back to your original post (sorry for the sidetrack), I doubt it's much of an improvement over a 30-30.

Were you actually asking if anyone here had something for sale, or were you looking for recommendations? As for recommendations, you might look hard at the Ruger American in 308 - great gun for the money.

Had a buddy dispatching hogs for the nc dnr in pisga nf. They used ar15's in .300 whisper. If its good enough for pigs it's good enough for deer.

Sorry got a little side tracked. Don't know if a .300 whisper offers much more than the 30-30. I got a mossberg 4x4 in 300 win mag last year. Lot of gun for the money. Probably find one for less than an ar upper in blk.

Both really. I'm always open to suggestions. The Ruger does look like a good gun.

The Mossberg does look nice.

I think I'll keep my eyes open for a good deal on a .308 or 30-06. I like the idea of just switching the upper to get some more punch from the AR, but I'd really like to get a good bolt action rifle since I don't have anything filling that slot right now.

Well, the wife has started hunting this year, and she wants a Tikka T3 Hunter in .270. So if anyone has one for sale or runs across one, let me know.
