Hello,

Sorry to hear about what happened in Charleston.

Was curious to drop in and see what perspectives were. I'm currently very active with the NRA's state affiliate in Illinois (ISRA), and was wondering what threats and opportunities there might be for gun rights right now.

I'm amused that I'm on an out of state forum being greeted by someone who is not from that state either. :D

I see you're a moderator... what is your sense of the political involvement / activity here? I'm wondering if it will be productive / helpful to make a post in the South Carolina Gun Laws and Legislation section suggesting that people contact their reps about getting the church prohibition removed.

I can point out, for example, that here in Illinois it was another attack in church (against Mary Shepard) that lead to us getting CCW. Churches are not a prohibited place in Illinois like they are in South Carolina. We are also seeing a lot of movement and interest by the anti's to push "universal background checks" and more registration (sometimes called titling a firearm like titling a car). I could share some of what we're seeing.

SC's Legislature is too busy banning Rebel flags and tripping over each other to find ways to spend the unexpected extra $400 million in the budget to worry about gun stuff.

Plus you got anti-gun Charleston city Mayor Joe Riley running his suck about how it blows his mind how people think that if you shoot a bad guy then the bad guy stops killing innocent people and it is unconscionable to give old people the right to defend themselves.

Blaming a piece of cloth for violence is even worse than blaming a firearm. Does seem to be a convenient distrction.

I bet it has a lot to do with the fact that none of the ideas commonly promoted by the anti's would have diminished the chance of the SC shooting. They have nothing to hang their hat on.

* It wasn't a straw purchase
* He passed a background check
* Waiting period wouldn't have helped, based on time frame of purchase to criminal act
* Declaring the area to be a gun-free zone didn't help

The only thing that would have stopped it was a cop, off duty cop, or armed citizen. Even a knife or baseball bat may have diminished the harm (though not as effectively as a firearm considering that some of the victims were elderly and may have lacked the strength to deliver deadly force with a knife or bat).

How do you coordinate pushes to contact legislators? Does Gun Owners of South Carolina send out many notices letters or calls to action to contact reps or show up at anti events?

Yes, I'm the Executive Moderator here, been working as Sheriff and watchdog for the Admins on this Forum, one before it, and another one as well since here. Been friends since the first of June in '06 with one of them actually, we are as close to being brothers excepting DNA(still not checked on that yet). As a subject of the Socialist Republic of Moscowchusetts, I can tell you that the draconian firearms laws among others here are some of the worst in this country. The media and PC controlled government and populace can't see a damn thing when it comes to common sense. This latest issue caught fire about the flag of the Southern Cross blew up first from a commentary by Jon Stewart, at least that was the first I had seen or heard about this whole fiasco. One person commits a hate crime and now the whole country is going off like crazy. Now we also get to hear how the great Donald Trump can put both of his feet in his own mouth. Forget about Republican and/or Democrat problems, current administration problems as well. Worry about this now that Caitlin Jenner got her life back together. The facts are that we are approaching yet another election year soon and EVERYTHING is wrong about ALL of our political system these days. More laws and legislation don't help at all if they can't even properly use the ones already established. More money and aid is given to other countries or illegals and foreign nationals here, yet we can't take care of our own people-ESPECIALLY OUR ARMED FORCES AND VETERANS WHO DESERVE HELP THE MOST.

Time for the whole country to get on the same page and do what's right for every citizen of the USA.

We often hear about and see/read media bias, but never was it so starkly displayed to me as it was at two separate events in the last month.

First, we had a counter protest at Chucks Gun Shop, a retailer about 1000 feet outside the city border. Everytown tries to blame them for all that ails the south side, and held a media event there, bussing people in and having them obstruct the public rights of way, among other things. Our group stayed behind a chain link fence on private property. Both sides had signs and chants. Local major media kept their cameras with the other group almost the entire time (several hours). Then, when one individual with a microphone started yelling random stuff about Yemen, the cameramen sprinted over to him. He was about to get arrested because he was using a megaphone even though our group choose not to get a permit (remember we stayed on private property). Once that commotion was over they went back to the anti's. Eventually near the end we got a few interviews by an unknown independent journalist pair (man and woman) who wouldn't identify who they were with.

Second, about a week later, a very anti Catholic priest from the south side held an event in a suburban church, and gave a sermon/presentation on a weeknight. Packed out the church (capacity several hundred). He went on a tirade against guns (ban assault rifles, title guns like we title cars, UBC, NRA has blood on its hands etc) after giving a token gesture to non-firearm societal ails (a lot of that being socialist redistributionist garbage). The media was there again in force. Right after his presentation, and immediately before the public question and answer period started, the cameras left - again. Q&A lasted about 45 minutes, with little coverage.

One problem I feel like we have is that our side is reactionary from a PR / knowledge sharing standpoint. We are proactive in the courts, and proactive in the legislature, but not proactive with the public. I don't feel like we're doing very good with getting our message out.

The other side is.

So what do we do? I've got some people I'm working on to nurture their interest in lawful use of firearms and becoming owners. Doesn't feel like enough though.
