If you have an interest in understanding and repairing 1911, I recommend you the 1911 shop manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen that is quite complete.
It contains all drawings , dimensions, tolerances and tests you need to rebuild and synchronize a 1911 in 45ACP.

This was pretty common, back when pistolsmiths/gunsmiths were more craftsmen than machinists.

I learned how to do it because I didn't have a mill early on. But I must admit that using a mill and a dovetail cutter is much faster. But the downside is it's much easier and faster to screw up too.
