Going to keep the intro as short as possible, I'm Anthony, Live in Oklahoma City, not new to firearms but new to the concept of 3 Gun and competitive shooting, I'm looking for some advise on what would be a "good" & "inexpensive" start out set. Currently am building an AR 15 chambered in 5.56 NATO and own a Para Ordnance .45 1911 with Wilson Combat internals. Bare in mind that I come from a military trained background (almost 8 years as a Navy Corpsman (FMF), any help y'all can give will be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Doc

Welcome to BoomerShooter Doc!
You found the right place to all the information your looking for.

First of all, you need to determine what dicipline you want to shoot.

Most start out with steel challenge, progress to USPSA matches, and some go on to three gun.

Steel challenge is normally shot with .22 as you only need to "ring" the steel. Speed shoot.
Uspsa uses centerfire pistol in different stages that require the shooter to run stages that make them shoot steel poppers, paper, swinging targets, etc. Very challenging.

3 gun.....I'm getting ready to start in it, but I'll bet somebody will check in to let you know the story.

Not to be crude, but cant be any harder than the "targets" I faced overseas, lol. I look forward to my walk down the path of competitive shooting. the guy that turned me onto this site (dont know his sn but gonna give a shout out to him anyway, THANK YOU, MR. John Hensy) said that with a proper ar and shotgun to compliment my .45 i could shoot "Heavy Metal Div" (not sure what that is, but i am sure i will find out very soon)

If you are going to shoot USPSA. I would go with a 40 cal gun. A Glock 22 or 24, XDM 5.25, or Smith and Wesson 40 pro.
The good thing about a XDM is when you buy one it comes with everything you need to be shooting the day you buy the gun.
Comes with holster, and mag pouches, and you can catch the specials they run often. Once you buy the Weapon you send in your Receipt to them and they will send you another mag pouch and 3 mags!!!!
So now you have a sweet new gun, 5 magazines, 2 mag pouches, and a holster. Then once you shoot for a while, and feel out what you think you want to upgrade. You can get all the goodies at makereadyproshop.com he is here in town and he is also a fellow shooter. He even delivers parts and upgrades to local matches!!
Then you are set and ready to come on out and shoot with us and you will see some of the stuff you are going to need. There is a list of all the local matches on this site.
Hit me up if you need help with anything.

Welcome! I think if you want to shoot heavy, you'll need a .308 rifle and pump shotty. I've been gathering for a while, and determined to shoot first 3 Gun this month. But steel and USPSA are a lot more fun than pointlessly sending lead down range. Just go, shoot, be safe, and have fun. Then you will know what scratches your itch!

This is the place to be. We got a wide array of shooters. Grand Masters, Masters, A,B,C,D, U class shooters and then theres Burk.
Amazing 3 gunners to the ones that shoot it just for the astounding amount of fun it is....then theres Burk.

Youre in good company, just watch out for Burk
