A week from Sundsy I plan to shoot my first Steel Challenge match. Any advice? Should I just bring my Production gun, or maybe pick up a new rim fire pistol? (anything to justify a new pistol)

Rimfire pistols are fun for Steel Challenge, as are rimfire rifles. If you're wanting to get a new rimfire pistol anyway, I'd pick one up and shoot it and your production gun both. Having five mags helps speed up the stage so you aren't having to reload mags between strings.
Mags are hard to find right now if your going for a new pistol. Its pretty easy to borrow a similar mag from somebody else, or have a "loader" go with you to the line to fill your emptys.
Don't be afraid to ask, people are willing to help.
I'm set if I just shoot my XDm. I wanted to try 3Gun Saturday, but was stuck at the powerhouse. And this looks like a lot of fun. You see, I got this new shirt, and.....

Dennis made a good point. Even if you just have two mags, somebody on your squad will be willing to help you reload the empty mag while you shoot. Even if you just have one mag, still go out and shoot. Don't not shoot a pistol just because you don't have five mags.
Steel Challenge is not only fun but if you are in it for competition and getting better and not just fun it is a great training aid for all types of shooting. The transitions that you do in SC compare greatly with USPSA. Plus where else can you go and only have a 125 round count(providing your range shoot's 5 stages per match) and do 25 Draws from Surrender, 100 Transitions AND NEVER have to do a "while shooting" reload? lol
