Firearm dealers - record of sale

Had a discussion with a co-worker. He was concerned about selling his handgun to a private party without going thru FFL dealer. He is concerned that if a buyer used it to commit a crime, the s/n would be tracked back to him. Didn't know the answer to this...are s/n traceable back to original purchasers? I told him I thought a bill of sale would be all he needed to keep him in the clear.
What say you guys who are in the know about this?

I'd tell him not to vote democrat again and not to sell his gun in a back alley on the south side.

Have the transaction go through a FFL. It's not required but can't hurt if he's concerned. I would do the bill of sale at a minimum.

LOL...he took it to the gunshow and there was a 'collector' there who laid out the cash, but backed out when he found out about the FFL thing. The gun is a S&W mod 66-2, not exactly ganster material.

The odds of any gun being used in a crime is so low it's not worth the effort to hang onto a bill of sale until you're dead IMHO.

A bill of sale would be so easy to forge that its not really worth much in my opinion. Dont know about other states but TX doesnt require any paperwork to individual to individual transfers. Just dont sell to known criminals or anyone you dont feel comfortable with.

Here is what I have told folks to do in the past. Get yourself an a&d book ( bound book) like the one from brownells. Record your acquisitions when you get them and when you sell one, record where it went. This is just for you and you can store it someplace safe. Then you will have a personal inventory to look at incase anything happens. ( theft, fire loss, etc)
