Cool Section Idea

Since I'm in Colorado I figured I would browse the USPSA situation up here. Found this on the Eastern CO Section website:

What is the Section Qualifier series? / How are Nationals slots awarded?
The Section Qualifier series is how the ECO section awards slots to USPSA Nationals. Every year, one match at each club is designated a Section Qualifier match. You must score in at least 3 such matches -- in the same division -- to be ranked in that year's Qualifier series. Your best 3 scores (as match percentages) from the series are averaged to produce your Qualifier series score. Once all scores are tallied, slots are offered to competitors in rank order.
The section receivers a varying number of slots in each division each year, depending on how many total slots are available, how the divisions are scheduled at Nationals, and the level of participation in the section in that division that year. Limited is consistently the most popular division in ECO and tends to be awarded the most slots, followed by Open and Production.
Note that just because we are awarded e.g. 9 slots to Open Nationals, it isn't necessarily true that the top 9 finishers in the Qualifier series will be the ones to get them! Attending Nationals is a significant committment of time and money, and not everyone who earns a slot will be able to use it. If a competitor declines their slot, it will be offered to the next highest ranked competitor, all the way down the list to last place! It is not uncommon for 20th place to be awarded a slot in this way, so if you want to go to Nationals it pays to shoot 3 Qualifiers even if you do not expect to rank highly. If slots remain after the rankings are exhausted, they will be offered to the section on a first-come first-served basis.
If, at the conclusion of the Qualifier series, you did not win a slot, or if you wish to attend another National match (in another division), get on the waiting list as soon as it opens. Not every USPSA section awards slots in the same way, and some sections end up with some or all of their slots un-awarded. These slots are returned to USPSA and offered to people on the waiting list on a first-come first-served basis.

I think this is a really cool idea, not only for slots but for the overall State Champion. The clubs wouldnt need to have a special match, just pick a date on the calender that their normal match is a "Qualifier". Still have the state match for each division but say your percentage counts twice from that match to make it more important in the overall.

I'm just kinda thinking out loud here and wanted to see what everyone thinks of this. It would also do a good job of getting shooters from across the state to visit other ranges.

I like the idea. Just takes a little administrative work on someone's part.

It would be cool to be able to compete for slots versus just trying to get a walk on slot which is what I did this year.

That's close to what I have been thinking moving forward, but at a more basic level until a system can be in place to track those points. I was thinking that section champions could represent the state at an area match and then by a point calculation would represent the section at Nationals. All the details still need to be worked out but an incentive program sounds like a hell of an idea. Anything that gets folks from around the state to shoot more than just one monthly match regularly would be awesome.

You should talk with the AR S/C. We have a system that encourages shooting at other clubs within your section if you want a shot at a slot for nationals.
We use a simple spreadsheet to track participation which could prob also be used for 'ranking'.
Just gotta get the clubs to send all their results and mission counts in along with their section fees...

You could use a google spreadsheet and just let the MDs enter participation and allow anyone to view. Maybe have those that are going to be interested in a slot contact you so the MDs only need to enter participation for those interested.

They do exactly the same thing in Wisconsin. It's fun because each qualifier match is like a mini-major. Even though it's a club match, all of the good shooters from across the state show up because they want slots for nationals or at least bragging rights.

I've never had the time to shoot nationals, but this seems like it would be a very fair and transparent way to distribute slots.

If we had something like this in place, I know I would drop an out of state major or two to be able to make it to qualifier matches.

if something like this were put in place, everyone should remember that you are still 99% likely to get a slot if you get on the waiting list super quick. so, with that in mind, Im all for rewarding participation.
