I bet they thing would just be getting warmed up at 600 Yards. I cant see it real well but I'm thinking the optics will be the only thing to stop us from shooting 600. You prob wont have enough come ups without a scope with tactical/target turrets (14.5-16MOA for .308 at 600) But we can sure as hell try

That is at best a 200-300 yd scope and inexpensive (cheap) and old , as well. But I would give it a try. I'm saving up for better glass for the 20" AR15 and this one. Some day my ship will come in if it doesn't sink first.

Just thought I would let you know. I don't know what your price range is but we have several members at the club who have the GEN 4 or 5 WOTAC scope. They love it and at $329 that about as cheap as you want to go on a long range scope. Having seen it in action I can attest that it tracks 100% which is a must in long range shooting. Some cheaper and even more expensive scopes don't do this and nothing will piss you off more than dialing up to 600 one day and then the next day the same moa is actually 1 moa off. Same with returning to zero. If a scope doesnt return to zero every time its useless. If I was pinching pennies and was a casual long range shooter I would def own one of these.

You are an evil man..... Sending me to a site like that and putting thoughts in my head. That is a nice looking scope . I will have to take a serious look at my saving strategy. I like that scope. Oh crap!! I just imagined it on top of that 308. I'm doomed
Thanks, Henry, I will put that one at the top of my list. Now...for the AR15 scope and 600-800yds.

Well, Just Buy two! lol. Your really going to hate me on this but if it were me I would save up and buy a Vortex Viper PST First Focal Plane 6-24x50. It will be the last scope you buy. AWESOME GLASS and they worked out all the kinks last year and it is just plain BAD ASS. I know a place that has it $799 Delivered. The only bad part is your gonna wait a few months to get it cause everywhere is back ordered. I would put this one on the .308 and put the WOTAC on the .223. I am saving up for this one or the RAZOR HD made by vortex. I have looked though their glass and its real clear. on both. The razor is 1599 shipped. People on snipers hide can't speak enough good stuff about both models. They have also done some write ups on the WOTAC...They had issues with gen 2 and 3 but the 4 and 5's have perfected the scope.

The 329.00 would be the top of my budget right now. I can't justify more for casual long range shooting. I read the comments on sniper hide and that scope would do what I needed. How did they shoot with the old leatherwood scopes and hit? I know it is more than the equipment. There is a lot of skill and knowledge that the scope can't make up for. I hope this rifle will let me reach on out there.

Funny Story...At the long range class two weeks ago we had an old man break out an antique gun and scope. Honestly I have never seen anything like it before. It was a VERY OLD savage .243 and it had a 24" external adjustment mount scope and I swear to god he shot the best groups of anybody out there and we had shooters in the class that had $7000 + rifles/optics. It was hilarious. The instructor laughed but he shot 600 and 800 like it was the cool thing to do. The 24" scope tube and reticle is fixed power/reticle. It is mounted on one end to the barrel and its a fixed mount and the mount that is at the back of the receiver is a box around the scope with two bolts pushing on the sides of the scope. Turn the bolts and it moves the back of the scope up/down left/right to adjust it. He said it was his dads from the 50's. The glass was very clear too. It was a sight to see.

Hi Dale,
I took it out to Boggyhead today and I am in love with that firearm. The brake and the AR platform gave me the softest shooting rifle of that caliber I have ever had the pleasure of shooting. I got quite a few complements on the rifle and several people mentioned reading about the trip to East Coast to get it ready for me.
Thanks again for the great work.

Henry
I'll say it again, It is the man that pulls the trigger, not the equipment, that is most important. That said, I'm going to get the best equipment I can afford to help me do my best. I'm thinking about building a .243 upper for that AR308 lower. I think that would be fun.
While I'm on the subject, do you have info about optimal loads for different length barrels in .308? I have 100 primed cases waiting for the right combination . :D

My Good friend has been reloading for 40+ years and in his exact words...H380 will work great in any .308 gun/barrel length/ velocity range without question and he has .308's from 18" up to 32" You can play with velocities and powder charge but just remember if you are trying to get velocities up to the same as mine in only a 20" barrel remember to keep an eye on pressure signs. I am just starting to see signs of pressure but nothing unsafe.

I am running a 23" barrel and using 46.5 Gr and my velocity is 2676 FPS with a 7 FPS deviation which is great. You saw my groups today.

My .308 Load
Hogdon H380 46.5 Gr
2676 FPS out of 23" barrel
Lapua Brass 2.005 trim length
168 SMK...I don't know if it matters but I weigh each bullet and put them in boxes based on 1/10th grain. All the long range guys told me it matters so I haven't questioned it. They said it really matters when you have 20 rounds for score and 5 are 2/10 lighter in weight. When you are shooting for a 2" groups at 600 2/10th makes a big difference according to them.
Federal Gold Medal Primer Large rifle
COAL 2.810" The group you saw today was length to fit in mags. When I am going for group size I seat the bullet .020" off the lands and my holes are stacked up but that won't work in your mags.

The hodgdon number 26 book shows with a 168-172 gr. (H380) mi. 46 gr.at 2515fps max 48 gr.at 2634fps. This is not accurate cause mine is way different.

Thanks Henry.
I don't expect to be able to get the velocity you have although with the Polygonal rifling I'm suppose to get an appreciable increase with all other factors being the same. Suppose to be less drag on the bullet in the barrel. Also less deformation from lands and grooves. I hope that is true. I built this to be a compact (18" barrel) service level weapon for the Zombie Apocalypse :D An increased long range capability would a pleasant bonus.

Dale,
I'll be back in. I want to get some factory loads to try in it The Fed. white box NATO rounds worked OK yesterday and the Fed Amer. Eagles did well. I've got some antique Winchester Power Points in 150gr I hunted with as a teenager I'm going to try. I'm still breaking it in so it will settle in after another 40 or so rounds. I very happy the way it is shooting right now. It can only get better. Now if only I can.
