AR 15 steel challenge is back for 2013 at the OKC gun club. It will be on Saturdays this year and a different match format.
Short range match, 20 rounds, five each at plates at 100, 150, 200, and 300 yards time limit 4 minutes.
Long Range match, 20 rounds, five each at 200, 300, 400, and 550 yards. 4 minute time limit.
Rapid fire match, same as short range but a 60 second time limit.
Number of plates hit in each match determines winner. Time will be used as a tie breaker.
Any AR platform rifle, any caliber, A spotter/scorer will call hits/misses. You may have your own spotter to call shots.
Shots can be taken off a bench or prone, bipods OK
Match sign in is at 9 am, but late sign ins are OK til around noon or so.
The match will be shot at the silhouettte range. Enter at the main gate on sorgum mill rd.
Chamber flags required, usually we have some extras.
This is a rather informal fun match, no need to be uptight.
Open to all NRA members, fee for all matches is $20.

ten or twelve inches as I recall. Maybe 10 shorter ranges, 12 longer ranges.
Anyway, they look pretty small when you are shooting at them.

Can you only shoot the allotted number of rounds or can you shoot until you hit the targets or run out of ammo.

I think it is 20 plates with 20 rounds in less time than the other guy/gal.
Seems similar to a match I shot on hi power range last year.
If so, 20 rounds.
Also I assume "any platform" includes Optics?

That is correct, one round per target.
I should add that you will get sighters right before you shoot for record, up to 20 per stage.
Generally we will have one person shooting at a time and you can shoot one stage right after another or wait awhile and regroup. Unless we have an unusual turnout, generally you can just announce that you are ready to shoot or would like to shoot after the guy shooting or whatever.
For what it's worth, the four minutes allows plenty of time to adjust elevation, windage, and adjustable objective with target knobs or use your mil dot to figure elevation, etc. It's been done both ways.

That's the last Saturday of every month with falls on the 5th Saturday of some months after 3-gun, sounds like some good practice. I would have to do the rapid fire because I'm just not that patient.

Two more questions: Someone shooting rapid fire with iron sights would be scored just like me shooting with optics? And is it $20 to shoot the 20 rounds in only rapid fire plus whatever I choose to use to sight in and I'm done, or does the $20 cover all three, short range, long range, and rapid fire?

Troy
My understanding is that the $20 is for all three matches.
This is a work in progrss as the format is changing from last year.
In pprevious years when the long range/short range matches were held, we had both an iron sight and optical sight break. Very few iron sight shooter ever showed up so it was moot.
In the new rapid fire event, there is likely no disadvantage to an iron sight shooter and a trained shooter with good eyes may well have an advantage.
By the way, you can change rifles between stages so if you want to shoot optics at long range and iron sights in rapid fire you are welcome to do so.
And don't forget that time is the tie breaker in the other matches. Ties are highly likely so if you like to shoot fast(like most of us) that is an advantage so long as you can hit the targets faster than the other guys.

3 Gun at OKC Gun club is 4th Saturday. This match is on the 30th which is the 5th Saturday.

Reminder- match is on for Saturday. sign up starts at 9am but later entrys are OK. OKC gun club, silhouette range, enter on Sorgum MIll, gate will be open.
Forecast looks a little better with rain or showers ending Sat morning.
Even with a shower, the firing line is covered, there is a covered pavillion, and the silhouette range clubhouse is handy.

M855 is a no-go on the range, correct?

I don't know how long it will actually last, but from what Jim told me it sounds like you could be done in a hour or less.
