There are shootings in/around USC in downtown Columbia weekly but it doesn't make headline news. When I was at Clemson in 2002, someone got shot around one of the campus apartments but it wasn't glamorized. The reason is because the media wasn't sitting around waiting for the next potentially huge anti-gun headline to come across the screen. If they'd stop reporting it outside of LOCAL media to protect residents (ie: Don't go to main/park st, active shooter location) it would be much less extreme.
