2 Gun at the Dry Hole - $1000 to win - April 26, Alex, OK

I hope it wasn't his second time shooting an AR cause that's the guy who is supposed to be teaching the carbine class out there today.
He was the instructors roommate. Pretty sure it was the instructors rifle but no idea where the ammo came from.

Wow, what a day. We ended up understaffed on ROs for a variety of reasons, leading to things running slowly. Then there were the equipment issues... there was a catastrophic failure on one AR, and a broken extractor on the Barrett on the first shooter. The Barrett was a brand new rifle with a grand total of maybe 15 rounds through it, all on the day before the event. As no one had a cleaning rod long enough for the Barrett, we had no way to knock the case out of the chamber, and were unfortunately not unable to use it for the rest of the event. As for the kaboom with the AR, the shooter is definitely lucky. So am I, for that matter... I was RO'ing and was standing right behind him when it happened. He caught a few pieces of shrapnel in the arm, but nothing serious. He had me scared for a second though... I couldn't see his support side arm the way he was standing when it happened... I didn't know if he was going to pull back a stump or what. It was quite a boom. We still aren't sure what caused it, either.

Matt, did you address your concerns regarding the scoring with Dale, the event organizer? I have his contact info if you need it... PM me if you want it.

I did not witness the safety incidents you mention. I'd like to hear more details on what happened. Also, in the future, please take action or at least say something if you see someone do something that puts anyone at risk of taking a round to the chest, or any other place. If you see a safety violation and you don't do or at least say something to stop it, you are just as wrong as the person who committed it.

I did see and address some safety issues myself. One shooter tried to stage a rifle pointing downrange while there were still ROs and competitors downrange scoring and pasting. Another shooter tried to touch an already staged rifle under the same circumstance. Also there were a couple of times when people started heading downrange to look at targets without being given the OK by the RO -- once before the shooter who just finished his stage had even cleared his gun in fact.

Anyway, despite the difficulties, I had a good time, and most of the shooters there seemed to as well. I did a lot of running all day, fixing fallen targets and whatnot, and skipped lunch to keep running shooters through the course. I was hungry, tired, sore, and sweaty at the end of it all, but I still enjoyed myself. I shot the course after everybody left... it was a lot of fun.

Also I attended Derek's carbine class today, and it went very well.

I addressed the scoring issues with the RO and Dale. I also addressed the issue of the course of fire being changed without notice to everyone.

The replies I got to both issues: "yeah, I know. We'll do better next match"
If you're going to throw a match win prize of a possible $1,000 you should make damn sure the bugs are worked out and inconsistencies are gone way before the match ever gets started. Nobody seemed to know what was going on stage to stage and it turned into a guessing game.

I'm not going to waste my time trying to get a hold of Dale for scoring issues.
I contacted Carl (match winner) about him getting first place and Dale having his money and last I heard, Dale won't answer his phone for him now. I'll get a hold of Carl this afternoon and see if things have changed, but last I heard it was Nada.

You guys got $65 off me, congrats. I learned my lesson.

That's some shady crap ! It seems like the majority of the money went to ammo for the .50 BMG and seeing as only one person got to fire it we should all get refunded some money.

Got a hold of Carl, and he said he finally got in touch with Dale and is getting a check sent his way, so at least he's making that right.

First off I had fun, I learned a long time ago it is the people you shoot with that make the match. There was Donovan telling people that his Infinity was an Asian knockoff version of the STI, I chimed in saying it was another Colt clone. It was good to meet Robiare. Matt had his little girl with him, she seemed excited about shooting tri-city next week if she could. There are the guys and gals from Ada who made the run n gun in the summer & the Alex Zombie match this past fall. Can’t forget the Moore Cross fit group or Blaise & Julie who left Stone at home because there is no way Stone had a chance at winning or maybe Stone had baseball I forget LOL.

When they had halted the 3-gun matches at OKC do to certain match directors being out of town I didn’t totally understand why. What I have learned is there is a lot of idiot proofing done at matches. There are competitors of varies skill levels at each match. The goal is not only to make sure the shooter keeps his weapon in a safe direction during the stage but the weapon is always in a safe direction at all times.

If this was a $15-20 match that we are shooting for bragging rights then the scoring would have been less of an issue. When there is a cash prize then scoring is critical.

Overall I liked the stages I have addressed any safety issues below.

I had thought about sending an Email to Dale addressing any concerns but at this point I will put it here. This is a cold range, main issue is guns were unloaded and reholstered on the timer without going through the unload, show clear, if clear hammer down commands.

Stage one I asked about 180 I was content with the answer.

Stage two
As you progressed through the stage the 180 moved back.
The stage had two uspsa targets & the spinner. On completion of the pistol targets, (there needed to be a table or bucket to place the gun at this point) it was decided that shooter would unload and reholster pistol on the timer.

2 problems here
#1 if competitor turned to go to the next shooting box without having unloaded pistol he risked breaking the 180 (I saw this happen he turned the RO had him turn back down range unload pistol then proceed) while they were scoring I went to the competitor and politely explained what he had did and how the 180 works.

#2 This happened to me after the spinner did a 360, the last round had a FTF I thought I cleared the gun on the move to the carbine shooting box.
I get to stage four on the load and make ready command I realized I had a round chambered.

Correction would be have a table or gun box to place pistol, after the stage was complete, unload show clear carbine then unload and show clear pistol.

Stage four .50 caliber stage :
There needed to be a bucket/table for the pistol before grabbing the rifle (we unloaded and cleared pistol & reholstered on the timer) and bucket/table for the rifle before going to the .50 (which lucky I got to do).

Stage five (non .50 Cal stage) :
At the end of the stage you finish shooting the carbine and draw pistol and engage 2 or 3 pistol targets. There needed to be a table or bucket for one or other of the guns. At the end of the stage you are holding two hot weapons hopefully safety on the rifle and you are deciding which to clear first.
If this was a tactical defense class I would be fine. Since there were a lot of new excited shooters I wouldn’t be surprised if the safety was not engaged when they transitioned to pistol.

Conclusion:

I do believe we should of broke up into two groups from the beginning 18 in a squad is just to many. As the day wore on I think it took a toll on the RO’s, it is a taxing job.

In my opinion the RO’s were doing the best job they could, the stage design needed to be tweaked to allow the RO to do his job better.

They are putting money into targets & timers, they have the right ideas just need to add dump buckets or barrels and make the 180 more friendly to new shooters. IMHO guys that normally don’t shoot USPSA or three gun probably were not aware or concerned about the safety issues that we speak of.

David since you did not shoot the .50 I would see if you can get in touch with Derek he seemed like a good guy, I am sure you g uys could work something out once he gets another extractor.

Side note: whoever was RO ing me on the .50 caliber stage I think it was Daniel I ran my Ass off the thirty or forty yds to get to the last bonus shooting box just to see how well you kept up, to bad Tony Wall wasn’t the RO. :sarcastichand:

Well, I have a lot of honest criticism here and it will not be ignored. Nothing this past week went as planned and I take full responsibility for the event.

Here are the preliminary results. I intended to post the official results last night, but I fell asleep on the couch about 15 seconds after finishing dinner. I will post the official results tonight after I have another person verify I entered the data correctly. Three days out in the sun of setting up, running, then tearing down took it's toll on me. But on the plus side I lost 5 pounds.
