Trying to make up my mind....

So, a few months back I got a 1911. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, and have decided that when money allows, I am going to buy a nice 1911 with all the bells and whistles that I want, rather than spend a ton of $$$ on mine. Mine is a solid gun, but isn't what I want right now. I would love to spend some money on it, but I need to spend money on a pistol for the wife, and a CCL class for her. I am going to try to sell/trade my 1911 and get either a M&P or a Glock. She really likes the baby Glocks, and I think she would like a compact M&P even better. I carried a Glock for 5 years, and was very happy with it.

After getting my hands on several M&P's this last week, I really like the feel of them. They definitely feel better than my Glock. What are yall's opinions on the two?

Also trying to decide on a caliber. Probably either 40 or 9, I am toying with the idea of 40/357 but that's just cause I'm a bit crazy. This would be my one main all around gun for everything from some competition to carry.

Like you said, you can't go wrong either way, I love my M&P's 9 and 40 and I like the Glocks I have shot. My wife has a G23 which I really like shooting and would also like to have, but one of the things that keep me from making that jump is not having the ability to shoot lead bullets in the Glocks. Maybe when the day comes that my dad stop casting lead bullets for me, I'll buy a Glock.

I have carried Glocks for years. I carry a Gen 4 G26 now. I bought a M&P 9c and carried it for a bit. I could not get use to the trigger, and I felt more trust in the Glock. I think its just hard to leave a Glock. The M&P was a bit easier to carry. I sold it. I think I am just a Glock man at heart. You can see the size in this pic of the 9c vs the G26.

The main pistol in question is for me. My point in the first quote being that for what I would spend to put the bells and whistles on my 1911 I would be halfway or better to a new gun for her. And whatever I get, so long as she is comfortable/competent with it, we will probably get the compact form of it for her just to keep things simple.

aaahhhh! In that case, Glock 19 for you Glock 26 for her. As much as I love the 1911, most of the time, you have to spend some money to get the one you really like. On the other hand a Glock is like a hammer. Strong, sturdy always works.

And the 19/26 magazines are interchangeable. And you can buy BOTH of those guns for less than a high end 1911

Yeah, I am leaning towards a 19 or 23, but not sure. I like the feel of the M&Ps, but feel like I know the Glock better.

I really love Glocks, and shoot one as my main pistol, but I'm turning towards the M&P. At this point I wish I had started seriously shooting with one, since the trigger is better, the grip is better, the slide is a better design, and they have the same ammo capacities per size. I like the mag release button better, too.

I had an M&P40c and a IWB holster for a while, and the gun was totally awesome, concealed a little better than my EMP. I actually shot it much better than my full-size G17. I sold it to fund competition gear and upgrades, otherwise I'd still have it.

any gun you shoot enough, and train on it, youll get used to, as long as it isnt horribly un-ergonomic.. Dont fall into the trap of trying this pistol out for awhile, then that one, then this one, etc.
Not saying thats what youre doing, but thats what I did. I was playing "trade in the car" every 6 months.

Its a nice feeling when I can move onto more important things, like keeping up my skills, and bullet choices, lol.

Ive told many folks that I wish I had just stuck to glocks when I started shooting seriously.

Now, the guns I shoot are mainly 1911s, some M&Ps and Kahrs, and occasionally a revolver just to keep me honest. Thats it; not too excited when the new xdm 5.94 comes out, for example. Or the next cool da/sa from HK.lol.

My advise, buy an ugly glock or M&P, so ugly, youll never be able to sell it, and shoot the crap out of it. Then take a class, then repeat the last two things.

I have fallen into that trap in the past, until I got my RRA AR 15 and my Glock 17. Had the 17 for a long time, and just got a hankering for a 1911....... Lesson learned, should have just waited to buy a nice 1911 outright.

No, but I could afford to practice more, and wouldn't feel like I need to spend money on all kinds of work on another gun that didn't need sights, a beavertail, a MSH...

All the add -ons are nice in a 1911... but other than bigger sights who says you really need any of it? The basic Colt design is proven... and any bugs are easy enough to fix if the gun was built to spec in the first place.

My Colt is purty much the way they shipped in back in the 90's... Houge Grips, a little model paint on the front sight... I may not be the fastest shooter... but this pistol is as known as my favorite dog. Still has that spiffy plastic trigger and MSH too. One day I will send it away for some work... probably a nice refinish...it's white on most edges now. I may even put the fresh recoil spring in it this year.

Mike is right. Some of us have changed guns by mandate. It sucks to transition -especially if the current platform is a known quantity.

As far as hard abuse I would suggest the Glock or XD. I just haven't heard any real world tales of M&Ps holding up under abuse / tons of shooting and actually have heard the opposite.
Ref that Champion If the gun runs you only need good sights and a decent trigger, The money you save could purchase the pistol for your wife, class and some ammo. If that was a lt wt I would had tried to work a deal.

I have switched from Glock to M&P, back to Glock, back to M&P, then back to Glock. I prefer Glock...I think. Glock is simpler and if you don't mind the ergonomics, it will run while a lot of guns won't. It ain't pretty, it won't stack bullets on top of each other at 50 yards but is is more accurate than I am. The best part of shooting a Glock 34 in USPSA, is picking up a mag out of the dirt at OKCGC, banging it against my pants leg, then loading it back up to shoot again. Those fancy gun guys are over there with mag brushes and rags. Anyone want to buy an STI Sentry in 9mm?

Word! Lotta years with nuns and Franciscan brothers knocking me in the head with rulers.

I still have a scar on my right kuckle from Sister Mary whacking me with a three cornered ruler.

Was that in their training program? Its pretty consistant from the folks that I know that went to the schools.
