I've got a Colt Delta Elite 10mm Auto that I had built to my specs back in the early '90s. Pretty much everything you can think of has been done to it.
Slide was peened and lapped, Briley spherical bushing fitted, Clark 4-leaf spring, Wolff 24 lb recoil spring, dovetailed front sight with a Millett adjustable rear, Videcki speed trigger, lowered and flared ejection port, Wilson one-piece full-length guide rod, beavertail grip safety, flat checkered mainspring housing…
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but the bottom line is that it shoots way better than I can.

I also highly recommend this book.
If you're serious about becoming a 1911 mechanic, do it right—get yourself a proper shop manual.
Before having any work done on my Colt Delta Elite, I read the book cover to cover three times. It taught me to clearly explain what I wanted and how I wanted it done.
