Yesterday morning I drove out to the outdoor wildlife area's 100 yard rifle range. It opened at 9:00am, so I wanted to be among the first ones there (it can get PACKED, if you know what I mean!).

Anyway, I own a late 90's model Savage 110, but yet chambered in the legendary .308 (aka - 7.62 NATO). From what I understand, back then Savage Arms was really hurting financially, and about to go Chapter 11 or whatever or something like that. They decided to take the long action & short action models, and remanufacture them to fit in one main long action stock -- the model 110. Everything: .30-06, .270, .25-06, .308, .243, etc... For the short action models, what they did (can't really see it inside) is, they installed a metal/wooden "block" to fit inside behind the short action internal magazine. So you have a long action bolt, chamber, slide, etc... but yet combined with a short action magazine. Somehow, they made it work!

See... Isn't she pretty?

Also, as seen below, I scanned two of my targets after I got home yester. I tested out my Savage .308 at 100 yards with the elevation set to 1" high and secured in my bench rest. Wicked groupings from a solid bench rest! Woo-hoo!!!

Here is the last target, after I realized that I didn't need to do anything to my Savage .308 besides continue to use 168gr BTHP rounds! Talk about being a "tack driver"! Wow!! Here I put away my bench rest, hiked out there 100 yards, and strung up another target. I just hand held my Savage, propped up on my elbows on the big wooden bench & seat at the outdoor range. I stayed focused, breathed, relaxed, and gently squeezed the trigger, and fired a few shots to see how I'd do WITHOUT a solid, secure, bench rest. I'd say whatever deer I go after will be DOA and I'll have venison on the table!

My never forget day with my 7.62x51, I lost a friend that shot his lots to say the least I was given a lot of his ammo as I knew his records were perfect on his loadings. I tried some of his ammo at 100 and shot the smallest groups I ever shot with a box marked best ever was all on it, I saved a few for 500 yds as that was as far as I could shoot, unreal was an understatement, many hours trying to find what it was loaded with but never did find out, the best I could guess was he took LC White box pulled the bullets and seated his over the charge with same weight bullet as he made his own with Corbin dies and J4 jackets. Best my rifle ever shot.

The ammo I use (actually my Savage LOVES the stuff!) is from Georgia Arms, believe it or not... For common "gun show" ammo, those GA boys know how to reload! Never ever ever had any problems with any of their ammo!

This is the exact ammo I was shooting Saturday - their 168gr BTHP "Target Load" ammo:

That's some nice shooting. You make me want to get mine out that has not seen daylight for some time now. I have a Rem PSS in 308 form the same time frame that likes the same 168gr hpbt's too. Gotta get out to the range!

I like the 308..There are better rounds out there, but it remains one of my favorite for a number of reasons.

I have two 308's.
An Australian Omark actioned target rifle (out to 1000yds), and a Parker Hale Safari deLuxe hunting rifle.
Both shoot better than I can LOL.

I'm particularly fond of that Parker Hale Safari. I had one at one time & sold it...Mistake.

Gunflnt1 - the Omark has a tight chamber, freebored for 150-155gn bullets with 13" twist.
The Parker Hale has a SAAM/CIP spec chamber and eats anything upto 250gn, 10" twist barrel.
Was thinking I might move them on for a 260R or 6.5 Swede.
The latest, greatest don't do anything for me - love the old established cartridges on modern actions - just as effective on paper and animals, with the right bullet

6.5 Swede is also well liked & respected. I wasn't aware the Parker had a 10" twist,l always thought it was a 12" What was the length of your barrel?

My Parker Hale barrel measures out at 22" from bolt face to muzzle, measured on a one piece cleaning rod and measured from tip to pencil mark

Also using the same one piece cleaning rod and making the appropriate marks, measured one turn for 10" of travel.
