Carry Gun Match - Heartland Outdoors 5-20-12

Things evolved to include pocketful calibers, to include .22 rimfire. They evolved further to allow semi-raceguns to compete in "Other" division, now to be its own, separately scored match. I might rename it "Combat Action Pistol," or, CAP.

I like Combat Replicating Action Pistol even better!

Seriously, OK semi-seriously, I want to go off the reservation for the next couple of matches as I get closer to the Combat Rifle Championship in September. Can I shoot a couple of stages with my plate carrier / belt / drop leg holster? I need help in getting everything set up efficently and I think the group has the experience and the willingness to look me straight in the eye and say "Boy, that looks seriously bad."

We hope they fix some of the "don't make sense" things in IDPA. I for one- understand retaining a partial magazine--- in a gun fight you may need those couple of rounds. Reloading on the move? Looses me. I was trained to and endorse the whole idea of multitasking... and if that includes a reload on the move -so be it.. If my cover is no longer worth being behind,,,, why would I stay there to reload?

I take a hit for that every IDPA match I shoot

Tactical order? Yea...shoot em as you see em when you pie around cover... gppd habit to be into

We expect to see the production striker fired guns all taken into SSP... that means the XDs will not have to shoot with the Custom Defensive guns (or 9mm 1911 class LOL)

Right now they rule makers are trying not to turn this into USPSA II and keeping the spirit of the defensive "game". I hope they figure out how defensive shooting and pistols have evolved since this game started. It's growing- and I'd shoot it in OKC... I drive to Tulsa and Weatherford now.

Well, JMPI is complete and the safety is carrying my CWIE and I think we're going to make station time, at least if that cherry primary pulls his brain housing group out of his fourth point of contact. Geesh, I'll be glad when he gets his senior wings and goes back to just showing up with the rest of the pay hurts.

If you can decipher the above, you need more alcohol in your system.

All I really know about these plate carriers is that they are a bit warm.

my thoughts on the whole "what type of match should this be", if it ain't broke don't fix it... haven't heard too many complaints and the amount of people and returning people speaks for itself..

This match is nice because it's a carry gun match but u guys let me run what I brung. Do I care if my match results r with the carry guns no. U post my scores I know what I ran. That's just the way it is. I am glad I can shoot somewhere 4 miles from my house

Why should it matter what someone wants to shoot?
I think of it as the more participation we get, the better. Id rather it not be a pissing match about which guns are ok and which aren't because then people start getting pissed off and stop showing up then it gets to a point where there arent enough people to justify having it at all.

Shoot what ya got, have a great time and tape the damn targets.

I am not considering making any changes to the Carrygun match proper, I was only detailing some of the considerations that brought the match into being.

Ain't no pissing match that I'm aware of and amen on taping the damn targets. Real men shoot carry guns, well....and Burk sometimes too.

I think the uniqueness of the match and not being regulated is what brings the new shooters out.
I like IDPA, but I will be the first one to stand on a soap box and voice my displeasure at some of the rules.

I too disagree with original concept of having to be behind cover to reload. I do agree with what I think is the org thought process of not moving with a mostly spent mag. This can be fixed by stage design either letting the shooters be aware or they find their self saying things like oops or oopsie with a few colorful comments thrown in. Additionally they could dictate a reload or start with a down loaded pistol to force the reload. I like the former.

It's all trigger time and as long as no one gets wrapped around the axle it is all good.

Thanks David for putting these matches on and H.O for allowing you to do so.

Is this "sure" in reply to my question or Don's?

With the complete overhaul of the IDPA rulebook in progress, would you ever consider making this an IDPA match?

I'm a little torn about about including my score anyway, being as its "my" match. I'm not sure if I'll have my scores included in the results, but I'll probably keep shooting it either way.

Shoot and post your scores. I am sure you are the benchmark many are using to see if they are improving by!

Burk, I missed your question the first time.

Would I consider it? Sure, but only for about a nano-second.

I don't want to bash IDPA or have this turn into an IDPA thread. I was only relating some of the reasons _I_ will not run this as an IDPA match.

I've been shooting IDPA since the late 90's, including several IDPA Nationals. I've spoken personally with all the founding board members, so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with it.

There is zero chance they will make the rule adjustments needed for me to make this match IDPA sanctioned. If it was sanctioned, I'd have to comply with and enforce all the rules, including the stupid/deadly ones.

Further, if folks paid $20 and shot 30 rds or less, regardless of how "tactical" those rounds were, I don't think they'd keep coming back.

There have been two IDPA clubs in the OKC Metro area in the past, both have long since dissipated into nothingness. I can't say why, specifically, but the last one had some serious safety issues. (shot thru the classroom wall, etc) Was that the only reason? I don't know, but the fact remains there is currently no OKC area IDPA match of which I'm aware. If there was one, I'd go shoot it.

If the match did go the IDPA route, it would be uncompetitive to shoot a 5-shot snubbie, while .22's , 380's, lights, ports, lasers, and revolvers with barrels longer than 4" would all be disallowed.

IDPA suffers from much of the same thing USPSA does: real carryguns aren't competitive. THAT is the niche I've identified as needing to be filled. Active participation these past two + years, prompting us to go from one match per month to two, confirms the right decision was made.

Some good points. Three things though.
  1. Defensive / Practical
  2. 30 rounds is not because of the discipline but the match director (up to a max of 18 required rounds on target per stage)
  3. Carry guns are competitive as the divisions are outlined. If there were divisions for the categories listed then they would be as well. IDPA has no official Overall winner but each division has its winner in each classification. In other words a SSP/SS wont be competing against a ESP/MA.
Having moved to twice a month is a great indicator as well as the number of shooters that participate in your matches that they like the matches. Great job in introducing many new shooters to action pistol and getting folks out shooting. I would hate to think of the match turning into an IDPA match. Please keep it David-ees for that is the attraction of the matches.

the other thing that is (IMO) AMAZING about this match is that whatever gun you have, you can shoot. So when i bring new shooters they don't have to buy a fishing vest or worry about mag placement or get a trigger job.
This match is like a gateway drug, everyone is doing it and even though you are nervous the peer pressure gets to you and you think well just this one time and before you know it, your hooked, you have dropped a bunch of cash, lost your friends that don't do drugs, fighting with your wife about your drug addiction, thinking all the time about the next time you can get your hands on the next awesome drug....
