Survival Gun short list...

As would a 22 rim-fire. Many deer have fallen to the mighty little 22 and countless rabbits and squirrels. Easy to shoot and doesn't weigh much. Could be used for protection in a pinch and is a lot less nosy especially shooting CB caps or shorts.

I feel both are worthwhile additions. You already have med game and protection covered. might want to go low profile next. You could pick up a used shotgun and 22 for the price of a new shotgun or at least close.

Mel Tappan wrote a book called Survival Guns back in the day that was pretty good, you can can still get it on Amazon I think. Michael Bane is updating it according to his podcast. I'd stick with commonly available ammo and guns that are both common as well as easy to find parts for. Ruger 22's, Remington or Mossburg shotguns, AR and or AK, Glock's etc. If you have never read Patriots, A Novel of Survival, by James Wesley Rawes, its a great read. Fiction but makes you think about some preparations you might consider.

Back in the day, I was involved in an assessment of the militia movement. It was fairly easy to tell who was serious and who was running around in woodland bdu's reliving old episodes of "Combat". What became our initial assessment tool was to look at the weapons. Most had a wide assortment of everything. Some had everyone using the same rifles, shotguns, pistols, etc. One of them "standardized" on M-1A's, 1911's, Remington 870's and 700 BDL's, and Ruger Mark I's.

I guess I'll weigh in on this one.
Personally, my thoughts are that we will never see hoards of people roaming the streets, etc.
My thoughts run to natural disasters, like a thousand year snow/rain/earthquake, etc.
Similar to Katrina. There was some activity by gangs intent on stealing, not surviving.
The majority of people will lay there and die unless aid gets to them. They have no idea what it takes to survive without guns, or with guns for that matter.
If one wants to survive the apocalypse, you need to learn trapping using natural methods, such as pits, dead falls, swinging dead falls, snares, and the list goes on.
Learn to make an arrow from river cane, knap an arrowhead, and learn how to fletch with a bird wing. Get sinue to make bow strings from animals. Silent killers that allow one to survive without a gunshot that will alert others to your position.
Surviving requires learning how to build fires that cannot be seen at night, getting clean drinking water, and yes, an ample supply of toilet paper. :D
TP substitutes can come from the shirt tails of those that have fallen to your improvised silent defenses in a pinch.

Guns will be necessary. I'm going with .22LR, .223AR, & 12 ga.
That will cover people issues.

Dennis, I agree. In my OP Katrina was foremost in my mind. No there weren't hoards of people roaming the streets, it was the gangs that formed (or were already there) and began looting (and, for all practical purposes, plundering) that you had to watch out for. If you were "lucky" enough to have found yourself in the superdome, well...don't go to the bathrooms...

This...I fail in.

There is a big
Meet south of Stillwater called OJAM. It's not some quasi looney type of militia crap, but a meet of folks that have taken an interest into building self bows, and arrows/knapping like I described in necessary skills.
There, you can learn how to make your own bow from natural materials, etc. great group of folks that are willing to help anyone learn. Some of them put on a seminar at the wildlife expo at Guthrie each year in the fall.
Learning the old trapping skills, is kind of tough. I'm sure google can help, but I learned from the old people that actually had to survive with these methods, and prior military training in survival.

Btw if shtf, I wouldn't be against trapping the domestic animals in an urban situation for food.

Ok, I'm going to try making snares this week at work.

Keebler, you need a 22, and a 12 gauge. Not necessarily in that order, but fill those two slots first.

My guns to take with me if the crap gets thick, well.... all of them.

Look at the great depression, that will tell you the kind of things that might happen. Then mix in the fact that we as a nation are softer than we were then, and the scum are more plenteous. Some planning and prep is good, plan/prep for what? I dunno. I carry a gun everyday, a spare mag, and a flashlight. Does that make me paranoid? No, it just means I am preparing for the what if's in life. What you are talking about is a bigger, and less probable what if. So just like carrying concealed, find things that work, but don't go crazy.

Keep in mind that items like snares are illegal to use, not own. One can set them and practice, but not be out into actual use.

I've heard about this show called "preppers" and am watching it now. I LOL at the ones that are shooting at an open range while advancing at the target. They should be looking for cover.
Some have 50,000 pounds of stored food?
Reminds me of the hysteria during the cold war years when folks put in fallout shelters.

I'm beginning to understand this, which is cool because that was the whole purpose of this thread - get wisdom from men who have far more experience in these things than I do.

...soooo, I shouldn't be digging a hole for my fallout shelter?

Ths is great . I have about 15 coworkers that have already planned to come to my house and quite a few neighbors that have discussed this with me and I think we would have ourselves a pretty good compound.

Sorry bro sounds like your ****ed when the zombie start their terror attacks. I'm totally set up for this and if I had to leave and take 3 guns with me it would be

Ak-47
Some type of glock
And a 12 gauge pump

Then I will be off to find one of those sucker who stock up on all the food and supplies for me and take what I want.

Note the preference here for dependability in case it may have missed ones attention.

Not saying not to be a nice guy, but that is a serious burden on you if they don't have something to add / contribute to the cause. Plus you have to look at personalities as well.

Good thread. Go to grocery store today before the weather and get about a 1% glimpse of what it would look like in a real emergency.

Yeah they got alot to add . We are all FF together very close . I spend half my time living with these guys , we should be good. Ok I know there is probably some LEOs that will comment on that last statement cause they are jealous. At least the ones we work with do. As for guns it would be my AK cause I have the most mags and ammo for, my g17, shottie, and gsg 22 for my wife. That's if I had to leave in a split second but it would take alot to get me out.

Last seasons ice storm hit us down here pretty good. That is a pretty good indicator as well. I was off the grid for 7 days and 8 hrs. A buddy was 3 weeks off of the grid and is on well water i.e no pump. Folks were going into work with jugs etc to take water home.

First thanks for doing a job I and most folks don't do.
Being a FF gives a lot of experience and and order of work with and putting up with each other. So is you gf the only female? Things to think about long term and for some short term. Females of course need their specific needs as well for hygiene and meds. Lest we forget we need more aspirin when they are around as well lol.

As for a compound during the fowc (fall of western civilization) Marc heitz Chevrolet is the target for me. It has wind power and water recycling as well as a look out from the top.

I will be taking my guns and my father in law's with us as well.

My primaries that will be with me at times will be my Glock 26 or Glock 17 and my AR-15.

They probably thought the same thing in Greece. Now they've got mobs in the streets over govt job cuts
