Who's hunting Dove this year

Well this reminds me that I need to call a land owner and see if I can continue to hunt his property. My plan is to hunt a pond early in the morning, clean them, then tailgate, and watch football.

As for how to prepare the tasty suckers.... soak in water, then in Italian dressing, slit in between breast and breast bone, put a slice of jalapeno in the slit, wrap it in bacon and throw it on the grill.

You lost me till you said bacon.

Just got back from walmart.
Holy mother of all dove seasons!! There was at least 100 cases of shotgun ammo on the floor. Decoys are 6 for $12.99, and they have the wind powered mojo decoys for $14.00 so I bought another. All of the rifle and pistol ammo shelves were full. So much for an ammo shortage. :D

That's good news. I need to stock up on 12ga to feed the new Benelli.

I've got like 175 12g, hopping that's enough, season start is less then a month away. I need to get back with my land owner to see if my scheduel works out for him.

If you shoot the national average of 4-6 birds per box, you could potentially get 7 dove with 175 rounds.

Yes, I'm at work and bored, that is why your getting the meaningless statistics. :D

quick little buggers. 7 dove might make me buy more ammo. Lol it will get me started... hey wait a minute 4-6 per box(175/25=7) is 28-42 bird, you saying I'm a bad shot?

15 dauly 30 in possession except eurasian collared dove don't have a limit.

Never been dove hunting but just bought 16.6 acres. Walked it for the first time since i moved and its all grown up with rye and plumb thickets. Was full of dove. Might have to get me a shotty.

You might have a Roost area.
That is the holy grail of dove hunting. Shortly before dark, they will flock to the area in incredible numbers making for the best shooting on earth.
Before the new neighbor moved in, and dozed the hedge rows around his quarter, thousands of dove came there every evening. You could turn a shotgun barrel red hot if you wanted.

When I was a teenager my dad took me to a co-worker's old family home place that is now smack in the middle of Mustang. They had a hedge apple grove behind the old house. It had a long fence row/tree line leading out from the grove. Also had a couple of small ponds on it and they were known to grow wheat on their fields in some years, others they just bailed the grass. It was a mecca for dove and in the evening they would "line up" and fly right down that fence row to go into the grove to roost. We hunted that place for years and there is no telling how many shells were fired there. You literally cannot keep your gun loaded when you find one of these spots. Man I miss those days...

I can't wait for the 1st of September! We have some land up in Kansas that has a couple small ponds on it. With this drought anywhere that has water will have doves show up. Cut the grass close to the water do they can dust themselves and put a few decoys out a week or so ahead of time and then sit and wait on opening day with a bunch of shells!

Ponca had a Roost area that was a mile west of the airport. It was a quarter with hedge rows all around it from the dust bowl days.
there was a lot of erosion in the area, so the county put in a ditch that would equal some of the trench warfare days of WW1. Family's would line up in the trench and shoot dove untill they ran out of ammo, or got a limit. Sadly, that is gone, and the new owner doesn't allow hunting.

Yup! If there is any vegetation around the pond they won't come. Bare dirt is the key.

Yep. For some reason they love the dirt! After the hunt, dove breast wrapped in bacon in the grill! Dove is not nearly as good as quail, a little more gamey, but still much better than duck or goose. Water fowl always end up in my dehydrater. It's the only way anyone will eat it!

Give us your duck jerky recipe!

Nothing too fancy. High Mountain original Jerky seasoning kit with the addition of ground chipotle and red pepper. Cut the duck as thin as i can to make it taste the least like duck as possible!
