Whats your long term plan

You made some great points, JRSherman, and I agree with the biggest majority of it.
A water filter such as the Katadyn is worth its weight in gold and it can save your life. I agree that anything more than say, 1000 rounds of ammo, is going to become more of a hinderance than anything.

I really couldn't believe what I saw when we went to walmart the weekend after the blizzard. The things that I noticed that were gone in the grocery area, eggs, water, meat, vegetable oil and even mac and cheese. To think if we had anything that even resembled a disaster I'm sure there would be rioting in every grocery store. We have been stocking up a little before this, very little, but we have stepped that up. I got a 50 gallon drum from work that I thought I could use if something were to happen and we lost water. I guess the problem would be timing, we would have to get some rain to collect from the roof.

This is just my opinion, and please don't think I'm making fun of anybody's SHTF scenerio.

Having served in the Military for 16 years, and been involved in firearms for many years after that helping train some Army Reserve Units, I can assure you that with the technology that our military has now, I don't care how many acres you have, and how many bunkers you have, you are dead.
Your AR tacticool won't work against smart weapons in the hands of trained soldiers, SAW's etc.

Your "compound" will protect you until a single black hawk can engage you below the line of sight with a hellfire.

"Deep bunkers" are taken out easily with delayed 500 pounders from an F-16.
I think you get my drift.
In my way of thinking, and its worked in the past, and is working now, is to have small guerrilla groups to interrupt the command and control of the opposition.
Come in, shoot em up, and dissapear.
Thats the way it gonna happen in my opinion

i have no plan whatsoever, i enjoy living my life without worry, i don't really spend anytime stressing about things that "might" happen or things i can't control. my life is wonderful and God has blessed me with a great job, awesome wife, 2 really awesome dogs (black labs)....

did you get a new job?

Dave

Well I just to think I bug out somewhere. But as I get older I know I am not going to be able to do the evade and escape.

So I plan on bugging in, which means I will have to haul water to the house, be able to filter/boil it and store it.

Have rice and beans stored and other items and for long term have to look for a small community to come together.

Still working on getting the stuff I need so the SHTF better wait till I am ready B)

As I've said before, in a TRUE situation when the elephant dung hits the fan, the only currency that will matter will be a bullet. Ammunition or the lack thereof will determine how long you will survive because it will enable you to defend your family as well as barter for necessities such as food, water, and other tangible items.

In a long term situation, you would do well to have something like a Katadyn water purification system because the body can sustain itself for days without food but without water, you will quickly become dehydrated and your body will begin shutting down.

The people buying gold fail to remember one simple fact; only one bullet is needed to take all the gold you have in your possession.
Not all people buying gold! Dont lump all people who are using alternative preparations with different scenario outcomes into one pot please. Even SOME people who buy ALSO own guns and are not gunless idiots like i think by your post are implying!

I think if you are in a small town you will beable to stay put and batton down the hatches, espcially if you know your neighbors well. I have pletny of bullets and am slowly stocking up on food supplies got a few other ideas in the works for water suppy, but not nearly as squared away as I'd like to be

I don't worry so much for myself as I do my spoiled kids. I believe that I could exist on a pretty meager ration for a length of time, little bathing, drinking shitty, boiled water. My kids on the other hand... Once their iPods ran down and we ran out of pop tarts and coke... They would be SOL AND JWF. elephant dung out of luck and jolly well ****ed.

It was amazing see just how many people complained about power going out during those storms yesterday. Our power went out and my roommate acted like it was the end of the world.

He said, "how am I going to sleep with out air conditioning?"

He is working on his PhD in psychology and talks about wanting to study what it would take for people to break, guess it would probably be air conditioning for his fat ass.
