+1 on Mazda 3 being expensive to fix. Got rid of mine for an Accord. If I was doing it all over I'd probably go for the extra cargo space of a CRV or Subaru.

GT just bought a new Subaru, hit him up

I'm 6'3" and can drive my wife's CRV just fine. I'm certain you can pick a slightly used one for under $20K. They damn near run forever.

I'd recommend a newer focus, Mazda 3s are expensive to fix Calibers are ugly ass bastards the focus is still in production, gets good mileage and parts are widely available.

I once rented a newer Focus with whatever "automatic manual" they have, and when the thing shifted it sounded like the gears were grinding themselves to dust.

If you drive a focus, it helps to put baseball cards in the spokes. Really improves the sound...

I got the outback with eyesight. Very pleased. I went through Hudiburg and got a good discount through the USAA car buying program. Also, they gave me a very fair offer on my Jeep.
