The pigs are destroying my yard.

Ok, so for the last couple of weeks, my yard has been extensively dug up by wild pigs. Now, I don't mind shooting and getting rid of them, but I can't stay up all night waiting for them to show up. Any ideas on what might convince them to go elsewhere?

Invite one of us to come over? I suspect a 45-70 will take care of your... excess bacon problem.

Wild hog is gooood eating. It is a little less fatty. Throw some corn out and wait for them to come, then take the animal over to Cordrays venison and hog processing. They will clen it for you. ..."for a 30 fee. But worth it. When I hunt, I get at least two a year. Cordrays has good bratwurst.

I was thinking something a little different. Like maybe a statue of Obama in the front yard, or some bear urine, or something... If anyone is shooting them in my front yard, it's me, however, I'm kinda busy in the middle of the night right now.

It's simple really, start feeding them! If you want to avoid damage to the turf then place the corn on a piece of OSB with a 2x2 border to keep the corn on the platform.

When food is available they will start to show up earlier each night until they arrive at an hour which suits your schedule then drop the hammer on 'um. I've had good luck with sour corn attracting them back into some areas where they've been scarce.

This sounds like a good time to have a get together. We could all hang out on the porch and wait together. AND then it's bacon for everybody!

Guys, this is starting to sound like some fun actually. I bet if three or four shooters showed up, we could eliminate the herd(pod, gaggle, or whatever you call a bunch of hogs).

Question though. Is it legal to shoot where John is?

What license would you need to have, if any?

How long should we bait in advance?

How many eggs will we need to go with all the freaking bacon and pork chops we would end up with?

I'm game, sign me up for a weekend shoot.

Sounds good. I will bring some beer. Then we could hang out and wait for the porkers to pop out. When they do, we will have had too many and we will sit and watch them eat all the corn we just put out. And do it again the next night. :)

Just need a hunting license. You can hunt at night with hogs, and I think they changed some rules in hunting them at night. It may be easier now.

Love to put up a light over the corn area.

I'm thinking John would actually prefer someone volunteer to babysit the infant twins during the night so he could have some fun bringing home the bacon, literally. :D

I babysit, I even babysit twins, I have a gambrel and I can take a pig apart.
I also won't drink your beer, but you might want to lock down your soda.
:D

As for a deterrent, dogs can be trained to do the job usually without being dumb enough to get close enough for the hog to get a tusk in them. Usually. I suggest larger breeds because they're taller then the hogs and that gives them a small advantage in the intimidation department. There really isn't any way to keep them out otherwise as they'll break down most barriers. Some states allow trapping (I believe SC is one of them) but then you have to figure out what to do with some really unhappy hogs. The Florida Extension office talks about toxicants and repellents as possibly being viable methods for deterring hogs, the problem being that none are registered for use in the US. They recommend a combination of different methods to control them. The article doesn't have a lot of detail but you can read it here: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/uw322

I'm glad someone figured out what I actually need. The twins only eat once or twice a night... each.

hmm, if you have a lot of acreage, you might consider LGD's. I'm sure they would have a lot of fun chasing the deer and pigs! :)

One of the less fun ways of eradicating them would be to form/build a trap, and catch them, call over whomever wants the meat to dispatch them.

The trap design we use us a "multi-catch" so that you get more thna just one.. we;ve had as many as 13+ in a trap at once, with the lucky ones milling around outside and running off only after the truck arrived.

We're currently trapping, AND building "Hog Excluders" 30+" hog and cattle panels to prevent the hogs from getting to the deer corn... basically making something a deer can easily jump, but hogs can't.

The excluders will be anuwhere from 4x 16' panels, to larger area if you want more deer milling around...

Its crazy, but it works..

You may also want to spread diazinon on the yard too, it will at least kill the grubs and etc the hogs may be finding. If they're after acorns and roots, then you are up the creek..
