Snub Nose Championship, with FULL AUTO pick up! July 29th, 2012

Planning on making all 3 and should be well from having my Tonsilles removed by the 1st.
Will dust off the Ruger SP101 for the snub shoot. Who knows I may hit the target if David keeps it close.

I've found snub moon clips to be ok for a match but very easily bent when carried in a pocket. Had a 442 that took moon clips for a while. They are the fastest way to reload though when they aren't bent. I really prefer the SL Varient loaders, they keep the rounds secure and are almost as fast as moon clips if you do your part. I have some HKS I can loan at the match for a Smith J frame.

I am going to try to get a friend to watch the moonclips drop out and pick them up for me so they don't get stepped on and bent. Once they are bent I have found they will not straighten worth a flip. I have ordered aftermarket ones this time that I hope are much tougher than the factory Taurus ones. I have tried the S&W ones and they will not work in my Taurus.

www.moonclips.com offers a holder for a loaded moonclip that prevents damage/bending. Looking at it, it appears it would benefit from a holder for the holder, so it'll stay in the pocket during a reload. Yeah, I know a guy who could make that.

Yea I have a 637 j frame, I tried the HKS one but it gets stuck against the frame and you kinda have to fight with it to get it to let go of the rounds in a timely fashion...I figure if I have to reload that gun in a fight I might as well use it as a small metal boomerang. I imagine that would be unpleasant to have a j frame imbedded in your sternum. :assassin:

Back when I was a boy (Grandpa Simpson voice)... all the snub pistols had wooden stocks... when the speed loaders first got popular we had to thin the left grip panel to get enough clearance for the speedloader to drop in cleanly.
I have Houge Rubber grips (the larger ones...not the boot grip) and those drag a little. For what the gun is meant to do (BUG carry) I can take a little hit on reloading speed....

Running a J frame is a lot like drag racing in some of the old stock classes... your racing...your fast.... but it's never gonna be Top Fuel

That's why some of us run the little guns .... they require some practice if your gonna rely on one under pressure....

It is not when they are in my pocket that they get damaged David....it is after I dump them and someone steps on them. Hitting the floor doesn't seem to deform them in itself either but a shoe bends the heck out of them. I've got some holders for the 625 and they work good with the 686 HKS too but I have just been keeping the 5 shots hanging halfway into my left front pocket.

if you are shooting better than me, i am going to jump on them!!! :)

I'm kind of a carry it like you carry it every day kind of guy for the Heartland match. Stick those babies in a pocket and see what a difference it makes in reload times. I figure I better get 5 good shots off because it's gonna be a while before I get mine reloaded.

refering to the self defense with a J frame manual, I see that this is spot on but you left out the, "If empty, reverse grip so the hammer is facing outwards and tomahawk throw your pistol at assailants facial region for maximum effect", Im paraphraising of course.

I did my carry every day gun at the last match and had a ball drawing out of my pocket. I never carry a j frame so this match will have to be with the equipment that I have available and that is not much. An Uncle Mikes nylon holster and hanging the moonclips off my pants pocket.

mine is an internal hammer so I'll just throw and run. Actually, the reload isn't that bad once I get the loader out of a pocket. I figure any fight where I have to reload isn't going to fare well anyway.

yeah, I missed the last match but shot my little .380 Kahr the match before, it was fun and I learned a few things shooting it under the stress of a match. I carry my snub appendix carry a lot of times with a speed loader in the pocket so I shoot the match the same way. David made me an appendix holster for both my Kahr's and the snub, pretty slick and easy to carry.

If I ever really have to reload a snub, something went terribly wrong...I should be running for the car, and hopefully more firepower than a 38...a shotgun or something seems more appropriate.

If I ever really have to reload a snub *in the open*, something went terribly wrong...I should be running for the car, and hopefully more firepower than a 38...a shotgun or something seems more appropriate.

If your reloading *in the open*... something went terribly wrong. Fixed that for ya.

Basic concept for civilian gunfight: If the FBI 3 shot- total gun fight goes extra innings... you should be heading for cover. At the statisically magic FBI distance of 25 feet... if you did not hit something before you went for cover.. your probably the guy who fired "ONE" of those 3 total shots fired.

IMHO... running out of snubby ammo in a gunfight is materially the same as clearing a stalled- out auto loader (regardless of capacity)> If you cannot cover to reload the little gun or clear your high cap, odds are your gonna end up butt hurt or dead either way.

Anybody who carries a revolver should know what I call the "Revolver Reload Panic Drill"....and even if you carry speed loader or speed strips a savvy revolver shooter carries some loose rounds in his pocket.... If you drop the speed loader... or simply don't have time to load all the charge holes... stick one round in the gun.... and click till it goes "boom".
If you carry speed strips for the back -up plan- odds are you can get 2 rounds in the gun in the same time.

That little trick saved a lot of folks back when revolvers were the norm.

I've done it a few times at Heartland (usually to make up a shot) ..... did it help my time? No... but it's a good place to practice the drill.
