The critical issue here is:
THE. TRUTH. DOES. NOT. MATTER.
The Batman theater shooter didn't use body armor. Most people think he did, and thus icky guns are useless for self defense, because that's how the media reported it.
Soldiers at Ft Hood weren't armed which is why a fanatical Islamist mowed down so many. Most people think they were, and thus icky guns are useless for self defense, because that's how the media reported it.
If that's not enough, Fast & Furious should have made it abundantly clear that the facts simply don't matter.
The police investigation records for CT have been sealed for 90 days. By that time, the initial reporting narrative will be so solidified that any facts like the police response time, exact weapons used, etc will be 100% irrelevant. Do you think a liberal urban soccer mom knows the difference between a "Bushwhacker" AR-15, a M&P 15-22 (.22 LR that looks like an AR), a Mossberg 500, or a "Sig Schnauzer" handgun? She doesn't know nor does she care: they're all icky scary guns to her, and learning anything about them beyond what she's told by the media would interfere with her Oprah and American Idol watching. Even if the facts are relevant they will not care or they will call you a hateful bigoted idiot for "playing games about irrelevant details when children are DYING RIGHT NOW!"
What is relevant is contacting your representatives, sending money to pro 2A organizations, joining pro 2A organizations, and getting other folks involved in the issue. Brady Campaign doubled their fundraising from 2011 to $5 million in the last 30 days alone. Second Amendmenf FOundation (#1 court case winning team for our side) needs to do the same. Mayors Against Illegal Guns claims 400K new members; NRA has only 100K. Ultimately this fight comes down to winning emotional arguments at dinner tables with uninformed people, motivating pro-2A folks to get active in the cause, and applying sufficient political force to legislators to remind them that they will be removed from office if they vote poorly. I don't see how the facts of what happened in CT affect any of those objectives.
I'm not saying to go out and tell abject falsehoods because "we are better than that." I am just saying that the details of the truth are not going to win any key political battles in this fight.
