K, I'm not really a revolver guy so I haven't kept up with them too much, buy I do recognize the advantages they can have as a self defense weapon, especially for novices.

I've been talking with my mom about getting her a handgun for her house since she's now a widow and lives alone. Originally I was going to give her my Glock 19 or Kahr CW9, but the more I think about it I'm leaning towards a .38 special with 4"-5" barrel.
My first thought was a model 19 because of size, weight and being chambered for .357 I could load it with .38+p's

Are there other/better options out there? I'm not up to date on all the models s&w has so school me please.

Not sure what length barrel you are looking for, but I think any of the following examples would work very well in any length barrel.

Take a look at the S&W model 686 with a 4 inch barrel. Weight is under 40 oz. empty. SKU # 164222

You may also consider the Ruger SP101 as an option. Weight is 30 oz. and under. http://www.ruger.com...101/models.html

Personally, I would go with the Ruger, but that is just my opinion.

an air weight J frame with 148 grain wadcutters would be better than nothing... way easier than lugging around a 4 inch stainless steel gun as well.. or you could load something else in it too... the Rugar LCR isn't a bad option either

I'm looking for somethig with a little heft to it to help with recoil. This won't be a cc gun, its a house gun for my mom and recoil would be an issue with airweights and the short grip on a j frame jist isn't gonna cut it.

I think I would stay with a 17 or 19 Glock get a grip reduction if she needs it. Many women struggle with a double action pull, and with 17 rounds of 9mm she can be shooting for a much longer time than just 6 and good 9mm defense ammo is as good or better than any 38 special load.

I considered recoil when I made my suggestions. Anything too light will kick like a mule in .357 Mag.

I know Matt was not too impressed with the grip angle on the Glock.

Could always look into the 1911 like framed pistols in other calibers like 40 cal.

I like Kurt's suggestion of a full size 9mm with good defensive ammo.
Load it up with 17 rnds.
If glock isn't comfortable there's alway the M&P

Yeah I love my M&P and it's one of the guns I'll take to the range when we go. If need be I can sell the glock for another M&P if she ends up liking that the best.

I'll say get a G19 and a box of standard pressure 147gr Gold Dots.

And make her take Will Andrews first class at H&H. It's worth way more than he charges.
