Perfect home defense shotgun

The 870 Express is not what you imagine when you hear how great 870's are. Its full of cost cutting measures, and there are lemons. You hear about old Wingmasters or 870P's. But if you're never going to shoot it much, 870 Express isn't the worst choice. Better off with a KISS AR/AK.

The express is a shadow of the earlier Wingmasters.
I went through a riot gun phase a few years ago....Winchester 12, High Standards, 870's-
My house gun is a old H&R401 cut to 19". $100 bucks

1187 tactical is a good choice to.

The perfect HD shotty is currently for sale in the classifieds.

Every wingmaster I've seen for sale has been just as expensive as a Nova. I've never seen one for less than $200 bucks like people claim. The Nova is a quality gun at a very good price. They don't exhibit the lockup and ejection problems of the 870's and you can actuallly load them quickly.

But I suppose since I don't advise people to use Rossi revolvers etc. its just me being a stuck up gun snob right?

A quick perusal of gunbroker reveals nice wingmasters going for more than new Novas.

The wingmasters are priced that way because they are good guns. I have a 12 gauge I bought in 1993 or 1994, it is as reliable as they come. I have never had an issue with it and have used it in most dove and/or quail seasons since I bought it.

Sorry I stepped on your toes. truce. Really, enough.

The Remington 870 Wingmaster is one of the best slide action shotguns made. The 870 Express is junk. The 870 Express was designed for one thing and that was to get your money while shopping at Walmart.

In my opinion nothing beats a double barrelled shotgun (SxS or O/U) for two quick shots and least probability of a malfunction.

With double triggers.

I love my 870 and I have had it forever. I have not had any issues with it whatsoever. I put the Knoxx Stock on it, surefire light and ghost ring sights. I love it, but evidently there has been some type of issue with the newer models.

It's just my opinion that a semi auto is a much better shotgun for home defense than any pump gun.
No meth/ crack head is going to run from somebody racking a pump like Hollywood.
Your in a gun fight, rounds are flying, you take one in the arm. How are you going to stay in the fight? Yes, one can rack a pump one handed, but do you really want to do that while the BG is coming for you?
The semi auto in my opinion is the preferred choice.

So I sold my Mossberg 590A1 at a previous gun show just because the price was too good to pass up. I have been looking for another shotgun to replace it with and I was wanting a semi auto. What is a solid reliable piece that is not over a $1000? I currently have a nice SBR for home defense but I still want another shotgun.

The Remington 1100 is a great semi auto that a person can pick up for $400 or less used. Models designed for trap shooting, etc with run $600-$700 and up depending on the model.

My standard 1100 has ran through many thousands of rounds at trap shoots, and hundreds of days in the field wing shooting without failure. An occasional O ring change and good cleaning practices will keep them running. Should a part fail, the replacements are out there everywhere, and are cheap.
Rem Versa Max is getting a great reputation as a semi with low recoil even with magnum loads.

I don't know about the CZ's personally, but the semi auto's are getting a good reputation for being reliable. Just a little more money.

Go to the Benelli's and others, the price goes up a little more.

Basically it all depends on your budget. Self Defense guns don't go through the demanding abuse that a competition gun does. So they will see hundreds of rounds, not thousands of rounds through them.
