Looks like uncle Sam is going to upgrade and we can get ahold of a great platform!

I learned about this one playing a video game.

I hope it is just as good or better in real life than in my imaginary battle zone

The SASS is a great system that is much more versatile than a bolt gun in an urban environment. The ability to send 20rds as fast as you can pull the trigger, is a true life saver at times (sniper having to "clear" buildings.)
The M24 has the ability to make more precise shots at a greater distance. That is at the cost of speed.
That being said, they are both fun! (the suppressed sass expecaily) and I trust them enough to use either to save lives.

This has been fielded for a while and frankly...a DPMS LR308 with a good barrel and trigger is just as good.

Out to 600 yes and I know from being behind the trigger.

That said, the discussion is over the SASS (including your own link), a Semi-Automatic Sniper System, an AR based rifle chambered in 308/7.62, made by Remington which is just a rebranded DPMS. So...I believe it is in fact an apples to apples discussion and by avoiding the tacti-cool markup of a "military/custom rifle," the DPMS offers comparable performance.

My link was showing 4000 of the M24 bolt action coming up for sale...

My apologies. Took the link from your quoted post, not the original.

At that though, the 308, even in a bolt rifle, especially at < 5000 ASL is an anemic round at distance and it's why other branches have bailed on it (and why Big Army is FINALLY going to a round with more ass in it).

It's kind of a moot point now though unless the White House changes. Most of this will be academic with the draw downs and withdrawals.

Now...when events escalate (as they're sure to do so) that's another story.

ETA: In addition, the M24 is hardly sexier than a 700 Long Action chambered in 308. Modern bolt rifles far exceed what's fielded by our military and it's been that way for some time.

Have you see the M40A5, Im just curious since that is a 308 remington 700 SA with a Schnieder Barrel and they perform extremely well out to 1000. The point of rifle vs shooter comes into play though. I would have to disagree that a DPMS 308 AR is as good as a 700. Ive shot both as well but the 700 out of the box is far more capable as a precision rifle. While you suffer rate of fire, a precision rifle that is semi automatic is not really a maintainable system, there are too many factors involved. But to each his own

M24 is not a short action.

In Afghanistan we had bolts half the time and modified M14's the other half.

Thanks Ben-Sons for the heads up!

Just because the Army is selling off some rifles, doesn't necessarily mean they're giving away perfectly good gear. I know for a fact they're not following one particular direction with t \heir sniper kit. More designated marksmen these days, upgraded platforms, etc.

There's a little confusion flying around here. Lemme see if I can clear up some specs.

The M24 is a long action 700 that remington builds for the army. 24" barrel, 1 in 11.25 twist 5R rifling. Before anyone says it, NO, the 5R milspec doesn't have the same barrel as the M24, just the 5R rifling. Long action because the originalplan was to re-tool them later for 30.06.

M40(A5) is a short action, USMC spec. They buy 700's from remington, send them to Quantico for a workup, and out comes a NASTY piece of bolt action perfection. 25" barrel, 1 in 12 twist.

As for which is better, it really is up to the shooter. The Annual international sniper competition sees a LOT of army snipers taking top honors, but I personally think the M40 is a sharper stick.
I PERSONALLY cannot challenge the abilities of either bolt VS a semi-auto, however, the SASS was created for the purpose of rapid followup in urban scenarios, (i.e. the middle east) knowing full well that there may be slight accuracy differences. Since the vast majority of shots are taken 600 and in, any of the 3 will do fine if you do your part.

Let me be the first to simply say......I will be buying a raffle ticket or two, just cause regardless of the details, it would be a cool weapon to own, and a least a portion of it will be a cool piece of history.

Edit to add: well nevermind, apparently you have to be AT shot show to buy a ticket.... Anyone going that I can send money with?
