What does the 15 stand for? Why use it at all anymore?
I bet it's like the "17" in Glock 17. There was an AR-1, AR-5, AR-7 (still produced), AR-18, and everyone knows about the AR-10 and AR-15. The new version of ArmaLite still uses the "AR-" prefix for their products.Jesse Tischauser said:What does the 15 stand for? Why use it at all anymore?
ArmaLite used AR as a prefix to all of the weapons they produced. They also used a number for each model. I know the AR-15 was designed after the AR-10. AR-10 was designed in 1956 roughly, the AR-15 was designed in 1957 and based largly on the design of the AR-10. I don't know of any specific explaination as to the numbers used in their nomenclature, however, it does appear that each time a model is based on a previous model the numbers will be close. i.e. AR-5 vs. AR-7 and AR-10 vs. AR-15.Jesse Tischauser said:What does the 15 stand for? The AR-15 is so versatile I guess there was no need to. However, the FN SCAR looks like a modified AR-15. The infuence is obvious.Jesse Tischauser said:I figured it was an engineering iteration number sequence. There just hasn't been any other notable AR variants since that I'm aware of.
