Jesse Jackson makes many stupid statements in this video. He was referring to James Holmes and "the arsenal he had" and how he could have shot down airplanes. He was of course referring to the AR-15 James Holmes had. This was just one of the many completely stupid statements he made. He also said that firearms manufacturers should be accountable for their product like tobacco companies.
Even if the plane was taking off and 1000 yards away from the shooter, first the shooter would have to know the speed of the plane to be able to calculate how much of a lead he needs to have, as well as the trajectory of the bullet at that distance and compensate for bullet drop (almost 58 feet at 1000 yards). Even if a shooter hit it, energy of a .223 bullet at 1000 yards is 75 ft lbs. Would that even be enough to pass through the aluminum skin on a plane? I imagine the windshields of commercial jets are either lexan or some pretty thick tempered safety glass. I seriously doubt that 75 ft lbs of force is enough to pass through a jet windshield.
