Jesse Jackson makes many stupid statements in this video. He was referring to James Holmes and "the arsenal he had" and how he could have shot down airplanes. He was of course referring to the AR-15 James Holmes had. This was just one of the many completely stupid statements he made. He also said that firearms manufacturers should be accountable for their product like tobacco companies.

Even if the plane was taking off and 1000 yards away from the shooter, first the shooter would have to know the speed of the plane to be able to calculate how much of a lead he needs to have, as well as the trajectory of the bullet at that distance and compensate for bullet drop (almost 58 feet at 1000 yards). Even if a shooter hit it, energy of a .223 bullet at 1000 yards is 75 ft lbs. Would that even be enough to pass through the aluminum skin on a plane? I imagine the windshields of commercial jets are either lexan or some pretty thick tempered safety glass. I seriously doubt that 75 ft lbs of force is enough to pass through a jet windshield.

A bb gun can take down a plane from 3 miles away.

You heard it here first folks.
dammit Spencer, now they're going to want to take away my BB guns too

A .223 has every bit as much a chance of bringing down a plane as it does at blowing up a train.

We have achieved full retard level.

I suppose it could bring down a light single engine plane at close range if the pilot was hit. The bodies on light planes are, well, light and I could see how hydraulics or other controls could be damaged by fire that penetrates the fuselage.

At small air fields, planes pass overhead at slow speed and low altitudes (500 feet or less).

Jesse Jackson may not know very much about guns and planes, but he is a great humanitarian. I have alot of respect for him.

OK Whitey does'nt know the man and his accomplishments with the poor of inner cities.

Anyone notice how yesterday the major news networks were discussing the government requesting approval for using predator
Drones on us soil against Americans and all of a sudden not even msnbc was talking about gun control. Ironic isn't it

Yes I read the story and found it very troubling. But it would not be the first time in our history that the military has fired on and killed US citizens.
